The Truth Beneath the Lies

The tension in the room thickened as all eyes turned toward the Laurent patriarch.

Finally, Adrian’s father stepped forward, his voice heavy with something long buried.

“Seven years ago,” he began, “I made a mistake.”

A murmur swept through the crowd.

“There was a woman
 kind, gentle
nothing like our world. She worked in one of our foundations. We
 grew close.”

The woman in blue stiffened.

“You told me she meant nothing,” she hissed.

He ignored her.

“When she told me she was pregnant, I panicked. I was already arranging this engagement—for power, for alliances. I chose
 reputation over responsibility.”

The little girl’s quiet sob echoed in the hall.

“I gave her money. I told her to disappear.”

Adrian’s hands clenched into fists.

“And the child?” he asked, his voice trembling with restrained fury.

“I never saw her,” his father admitted. “But before she left, I gave her the crest
to ensure the child would always have a claim. A protection.”

All eyes dropped to the silver emblem in Adrian’s hand.

The truth was undeniable.

The little girl stepped forward slowly. “My mommy
she got sick,” she whispered. “She said I had to find you
 but I got lost
”

Tears streamed down her face.

Adrian knelt again, his expression breaking completely now. “You’re not lost anymore.”

Behind them, the woman in blue let out a sharp, broken laugh.

“So this is it?” she said bitterly. “A street child walks in and suddenly she’s family?”

“No,” Adrian replied, standing tall. “She was always family. We were just too blind to see her.”

The woman’s face twisted. “Do you know what this means? The engagement—everything we built—”

“It means it’s over,” Adrian said.

Gasps erupted across the ballroom.

“You’re choosing her over me?” she demanded.

Adrian didn’t hesitate.

“Yes.”

And in that single word, her world collapsed.
