CHAPTER 5: The Meaning of Cold

Weeks later, I stood alone at the harbor.

The same place I had sat the night everything changed.

But the ocean didn’t feel endless anymore.

It felt open.

Free.

Donovan joined me quietly. “You could have left,” he said. “Walked away the moment you found out.”

I nodded. “I know.”

“So why didn’t you?”

I watched the horizon for a long moment before answering.

“Because some endings aren’t about escape,” I said softly. “They’re about truth.”

The wind carried the last of winter’s chill across the water.

But it didn’t reach me.

Because I had already faced the cold.

And survived it.

Not by chance.

Not by luck.

But by choosing not to become like the people who tried to destroy me.

Nathan thought the freezer would erase me.

Instead…

It revealed everything.

And in the end, that was the only victory that mattered.
