Chapter 10 - The Meeting at Ten.

At 9:12 that morning, Ethan received a calendar invitation for an emergency board meeting.

The meeting was scheduled for ten.

The subject was Executive Stability Review.

Claire read the words over his shoulder.

"She did this?"

"Graham did."

"Because of her?"

Ethan looked toward the staircase.

Margaret had gone quiet upstairs.

"We're about to find out."

Connor wanted Ethan to join the meeting from his office downtown.

Ethan refused.

He opened his laptop at the kitchen table instead.

Claire sat across from him with Oliver in her arms.

The cake remained beneath its glass cover on the counter.

Ethan could not bring himself to move it.

At exactly ten, six faces appeared on screen.

Graham Foster spoke first.

He was smooth, polite, and visibly pleased with himself.

"Ethan, thank you for making time on short notice."

"You scheduled it forty-eight minutes ago."

"The issue is urgent."

"Then be specific."

Graham sighed as though forced into an unpleasant duty.

"We have received concerns regarding judgment, personal financial instability, and possible misuse of company-adjacent funds."

Claire's eyes widened.

Ethan's face remained still.

"From whom?"

"Several people."

"Name them."

Graham avoided the question.

"There are allegations that your household finances have become chaotic."

Connor leaned toward the microphone.

"Company-adjacent funds have not been misused."

Graham frowned.

"Connor, I wasn't aware you were attending."

"I was asked to."

Another board member, Susan Patel, interrupted.

"Graham, what exactly is the evidence?"

Graham shared a document.

Claire recognized it immediately.

It was a list of transactions from the emergency account.

Her name was highlighted beside each withdrawal.

Margaret had given Graham the same trail she had built to frame Claire.

"This isn't company money," Susan said.

"No," Graham replied.

"But it raises questions about Ethan's oversight."

Ethan leaned closer to the camera.

"Who sent you this?"

Graham hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

"My mother," Ethan said.

Nobody answered.

Ethan continued.

"The transactions were unauthorized."

Graham's confidence flickered.

"By Claire?"

"Against Claire."

Connor shared the signature analysis and the vendor records.

He explained the relationship between M. Vale Interiors and Margaret's niece.

He explained the canceled twelve-thousand-dollar payment.

He explained that the account had no corporate connection at all.

By the time he finished, Graham looked less pleased.

Susan looked furious.

"So you called an emergency board meeting based on private documents from the CEO's mother without verifying them?"

Graham began to defend himself.

Then Ethan heard a soft click behind him.

Margaret stood in the kitchen doorway with a suitcase.

She had been listening.

"Tell them the rest," she said.

Every face on the laptop screen went quiet.

Ethan turned slowly.

Margaret looked directly at the camera.

"Tell them your wife threatened to take your son and leave you last month."

Claire froze.

Ethan stared at his mother.

Because that part was true.

But only three people had known.

Claire.

Ethan.
