Chapter 8 - The Hearing Begins Without Him.

The Vale Group boardroom occupied the forty-second floor of a glass tower overlooking the city.

By the time Adrian arrived, the hearing had already begun.

Maya pushed open the double doors while Adrian moved his wheelchair forward under his own power.

Every head turned.

Grant sat near the board chair with a folder open in front of him.

He looked concerned rather than surprised.

That expression irritated Adrian more than anger would have.

Board Chair Helen Mercer adjusted her glasses.

“Mr. Vale, we started at the scheduled time.”

Adrian stopped at the end of the table.

“So I see.”

Helen gestured toward the empty chair reserved for him.

Adrian positioned his wheelchair beside it instead.

“I’ll stay here.”

Grant leaned back.

“Adrian, this doesn’t need to become theatrical.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Then stop performing concern.”

A few board members shifted uncomfortably.

Mason stood near the screen at the front of the room.

He had already challenged several statements in the incapacity petition.

Grant’s team had presented therapy notes, missed meals, canceled meetings, and an email Adrian sent at three in the morning containing two obvious mistakes.

Individually, none of it meant much.

Together, it created a narrative.

Adrian had become unstable.

Adrian had become isolated.

Adrian had become dependent.

Grant spoke quietly.

“This is exactly why I filed.”

“You’re treating everyone like an enemy.”

Adrian turned toward the board.

“I have one question.”

“Did any of you ask me what I wanted before reading a document about whether I can lead my own company?”

Silence answered him.

Helen finally spoke.

“That is what today is for.”

“Good.”

“Then ask me anything.”

For the next twenty minutes, board members questioned Adrian about active projects, cash reserves, pending litigation, staffing, and market forecasts.

He answered every question.

He corrected one director’s outdated revenue number.

He identified a supply risk that had not yet appeared in the official report.

He explained why he had postponed an acquisition three days before the accident.

Grant’s calm expression began to tighten.

Then his attorney stood.

“Competence in business details does not resolve the concern about judgment.”

He presented the two-hundred-thousand-dollar cashier’s check sent to Maya.

Maya’s stomach dropped.

Grant looked at her with practiced disappointment.

“We recently discovered that a member of Adrian’s household received a substantial payment connected to a former employee.”

Mason stood immediately.

“That characterization is false.”

The attorney continued.

“The board deserves to know whether Mr. Vale’s decisions are being influenced by people with financial motives.”

Maya felt every eye move toward her.

This was exactly the trap she had feared.

Mason introduced documentation showing the check had been moved directly into legal escrow.

He also showed that the issuing account was controlled by Celeste Rowe.

Grant shook his head sadly.

“My former assistant appears to have engaged in conduct I did not authorize.”

Adrian almost admired the speed with which Grant abandoned people.

Helen asked where Celeste was.

Nobody knew.

Maya requested permission to speak.

Grant’s attorney objected.

Helen allowed it.

Maya stood.

“My late husband, Daniel Bennett, investigated Harbor North years ago.”

Grant’s expression changed so slightly that most people missed it.

Adrian did not.

Maya continued.

“Mr. Grant Vale knew about that investigation.”

Grant leaned forward.

“Daniel worked for our family.”

“Of course I knew him.”

Maya looked directly at him.

“He recorded you asking whether Adrian knew what he found.”

The room became still.

Grant’s lawyer whispered something to him.

Grant remained calm.

“That proves I asked a question.”

“It proves nothing else.”

Mason played the audio clip.

Daniel’s voice filled the boardroom.

Then Grant’s younger voice asked the question.

Does Adrian know what you found?

Several directors exchanged glances.

Grant folded his hands.

“I had no idea Daniel was secretly recording coworkers.”

Maya’s anger rose.

“He wasn’t recording coworkers.”

“He was documenting an investigation.”

Helen interrupted before the exchange escalated.

“What exactly did he find?”

Maya looked at Adrian.

They did not have the blue file.

That was the weakness.

“We are still recovering the original documents.”

Grant sat back.

“Then we are debating ghosts.”

Adrian turned toward him.

“No.”

“We’re debating why the same company Daniel investigated five years ago received four million dollars while I was in rehabilitation.”

The boardroom erupted into quiet conversation.

Mason displayed the Harbor North transfers.

Grant’s attorney objected that the transactions carried Adrian’s digital authorization.

Adrian answered calmly.

“I did not approve them.”

Grant spread his hands.

“Then perhaps you forgot.”

The cruelty of the sentence was disguised as concern.

Maya saw Adrian’s face go still.

Grant continued.

“That is the entire issue today.”

“How do we know which decisions you remember?”

Adrian looked at his brother for a long moment.

Then he did something Grant did not expect.

He smiled.

“Because you made one mistake.”

Grant’s eyes narrowed.

Adrian turned toward Mason.

“The transfer dates.”

Mason displayed them.

Adrian pointed to the first date.

“I was under hospital restrictions that day.”

“My financial authorization token was not with me.”

“It was in the company vault.”

Grant’s attorney responded quickly.

“Unless someone retrieved it for you.”

Adrian nodded.

“Exactly.”

Mason displayed the vault access log.

One executive had signed out Adrian’s token.

Grant Vale.

The room went completely silent.

Grant stared at the screen.

Then he smiled faintly.

“I was following Adrian’s instructions.”

Adrian held his gaze.

“Then produce them.”

Grant did not answer.

A phone vibrated on the table.

It belonged to Helen Mercer.

She looked at the screen.

Her expression changed.

She turned the phone toward Mason.

A message had arrived from Celeste Rowe.

May you like

It contained a location and six words.

I HAVE THE BLUE FILE. COME ALONE.
