CHAPTER 2: THE BOX UNDER THE EARTH

The next morning came with the same unforgiving heat—but Ethan was different.

He had a purpose now.

He found an old rusted hoe leaning against the back wall and dragged it out into the field. The ground was hard, stubborn, like it didn’t want to give anything back.

But Ethan kept digging.

Swing after swing.

Sweat ran down his face. His hands blistered.

Then—

Clang.

The sound didn’t belong.

Ethan froze.

Slowly, he dropped to his knees and cleared the dirt with his hands. The soil gave way to something solid.

A metal surface.

His pulse quickened.

He dug faster.

Within minutes, a box emerged—old, heavy, sealed tight.

“Lily!” he called.

She appeared in the doorway, rubbing her eyes.

“What is it?”

“I don’t know yet.”

The lock was rusted, weak from time. Ethan grabbed a rock and struck it twice.

It snapped open.

Inside—

Documents.

And a letter.

His grandmother’s handwriting.

Ethan swallowed hard and opened it.

The words hit him like a storm.

The ranch—legally—belonged to him and Lily.

It had always been meant for them.

But that wasn’t the part that made his hands shake.

It was the truth buried between the lines.

Their mother’s death—

Had not been an accident.

Victor Hale had tampered with the truck.

Cut the brakes.

Planned it.

Ethan stopped breathing.

“No…” he whispered.

Lily stepped closer.

“What is it, Ethan?”

He looked at her.

Really looked at her.

Small. Fragile. Trusting him completely.

Something inside him broke—

And then hardened into something else.

“It means,” he said slowly, “we’re not going back.”

He folded the letter carefully.

“And it means… we’re going to make him pay.”

The boy he had been—scared, uncertain, surviving—

Was gone.

What remained…

Was someone who understood exactly what had been taken from him.
