CHAPTER 2: THE GIRL WHO STOPPED RUNNING

“You knew,” she said.

Spencer didn’t deny it. “I suspected. Not this soon.”

“And you still agreed to marry me?”

“I agreed to get you out.”

The words landed differently this time.

Not ownership.

Not control.

A door.

Alina looked at him, really looked at him, and something inside her shifted. Not trust. Not yet.

But something close to it.

“What happens now?”

Spencer exhaled slowly. “Now we make them think their plan is still working.”

Her pulse steadied.

“And then?”

His eyes darkened. “Then we burn it down.”

For the first time in her life, fear didn’t paralyze her.

It sharpened her.

“I’m not running,” she said.

Spencer studied her for a long moment… then nodded once.

“Good.”
