Chapter 1: The Boy Who Said No

“…Why?” the boy finally asked.

His voice was quiet—but steady.

The man didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he pulled out a chair and sat down, lowering himself to the boy’s level. Not above him. Not towering over him.

Equal.

“Because you didn’t beg,” the man said.

The boy frowned slightly.

“Most people would have,” the man continued. “They would have cried louder. Asked for sympathy. But you didn’t. You protected her instead.”

The little girl stirred weakly in his arms.

“That matters,” the man said.

The boy tightened his grip around her.

“I don’t need a speech,” he muttered. “We just need food.”

For a split second, something almost like a smile touched the man’s face.

“Then start there,” he said.

The worker quickly packed fresh bread, warm milk, soft pastries. This time, no hesitation.

The man slid the bag toward the boy.

“No tricks,” he added.

The boy stared at the food.

Then at the man.

“…We’re not going anywhere,” he said firmly.

The man nodded once.

“Then I’ll sit right here.”

And he did.
