THE MAN WHO STEPPED FORWARD

âHey.â
A deep voice cut through the tension.
Everyone turned.
A man stepped out from the crowd.
Tall. Calm. Controlled.
But his eyesâhis eyes were locked on the child.
It was Daniel Reed.
Owner of the hotel.
And one of the most powerful men in the city.
Victoria blinked in shock. âDanielâŠ?â
But he ignored her.
He crouched slowly in front of the little girl, lowering himself to her level.
âWhatâs your name?â he asked gently.
The girl hesitated.
Then answered.
âLily.â
Daniel nodded, his expression softening.
âHi, Lily.â
He glanced briefly at the photograph still clutched in her hand.
Then back at her face.
Something shifted in his expression.
Recognition.
Pain.
Understanding.
âIâve been looking for you,â he said quietly.
Victoriaâs head snapped toward him.
âWhat?â
The crowd leaned in again.
Daniel stood up slowly, his jaw tightening.
âI knew your sister,â he said, looking directly at Victoria now.
The words hit like thunder.
âShe came to me before she died.â
Victoriaâs breath caught.
âShe told me everything,â Daniel continued. âAbout you. About the baby.â
The room felt smaller.
Hotter.
âAfter she passed, I tried to find the child,â he said. âBut the records were gone. Someone made sure of it.â
His gaze sharpened.
âSomeone powerful.â
Victoriaâs face went pale.
âI didnâtââ
âStop,â Daniel cut her off.
His voice wasnât loud.
But it carried authority.
âI donât care what excuses you made for yourself.â
He turned back to Lily.
âBut sheâs not alone anymore.â
The little girlâs eyes widened slightly.
Daniel gently took off his coat and wrapped it around her small, soaked body.
âYouâre safe now.â
For the first timeâ

Lilyâs tough expression cracked.
A tear slipped down her cheek.
