Chapter 3: Scorched Earth

The morning sun breached the heavy, blackout velvet curtains of the master suite, casting a thin, golden sliver of light across the plush Egyptian cotton sheets. Clara stirred, a low groan escaping her lips as the physical toll of last night’s terror finally registered. Dr. Evans had been entirely correct; her lower back ached fiercely, and her shoulders felt as though she had been put through a medieval stretching rack.
Instinctively, before her eyes even fluttered open, her hands flew to her swollen belly. She held her breath for a terrifying, singular second until she felt it—a sharp, reassuring kick against her palm. A heavy sigh of relief washed over her. Her baby boy was safe.
Clara turned her head against the silk pillowcase. The space beside her was perfectly made, the sheets completely undisturbed and cold. Julian hadn’t slept.
Three floors below, in a subterranean, soundproof office that functioned as the tactical nerve center of Sterling Enterprises, Julian was wide awake. The room was a stark contrast to the opulent, classic architecture of the mansion above. It was a sleek, windowless bunker of glass, steel, and glowing monitors displaying global market tickers, secure communications, and banking ledgers.
Julian stood at the head of a massive mahogany conference table, his silver hair perfectly styled, wearing a fresh, impeccably tailored charcoal suit. He looked every inch the ruthless corporate predator the financial world feared. There was no trace of the desperate, terrified husband who had fallen to his knees on the marble staircase just hours prior.
"Report," Julian commanded, his voice cold, flat, and devoid of any human empathy.
Marcus, his lead corporate attorney, adjusted his glasses, looking at the glowing tablet in his hands. "As of 6:00 AM Eastern, the emergency proxy vote concluded. The board unanimously agreed to invoke the moral turpitude clause in Victoria’s contract, based on the preliminary evidence we provided. Her seat on the board of directors has been officially revoked, effective immediately."
"And the assets?" Julian asked, taking a slow sip of black coffee from a porcelain cup.
"Frozen," chimed in David, his chief financial fixer, typing rapidly on a laptop. "We initiated a lock on all trust distributions tied to her lineage, citing breach of fiduciary duty. We also forwarded the encrypted ledgers regarding her offshore shell companies—the ones she used to quietly embezzle from the Sterling charitable foundation over the last three years—to the Securities and Exchange Commission, as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation."
Julian set his coffee cup down with a sharp, decisive clink. He had known about Victoria’s petty theft for years, keeping the evidence locked away as a strategic trump card. He had always intended to use it to quietly force her into early retirement when the time was right. But last night, she hadn't just attacked his company; she had threatened his wife and unborn child. The time for quiet leverage was over. This was a public, absolute execution.
"Where is she now?" Julian asked, his icy blue eyes fixed on a monitor displaying the exterior security cameras of a luxury Manhattan high-rise.
Vance, the head of his security detail, stepped forward from the shadows of the room. "She is currently in her penthouse, sir. Her security access cards to all corporate buildings have been deactivated. Her corporate black cards are declining. And, according to my contacts at the Bureau, federal agents are pulling into her underground parking garage right now. They have a warrant for her arrest on federal fraud and embezzlement charges."
Julian watched the monitor in dead silence. A black SUV pulled up to the sleek entrance of Victoria’s building. Four men in windbreakers stepped out.
"Make sure the press gets the tip," Julian ordered softly. "I want cameras in her face when they drag her out in handcuffs. I want the world to see what happens when someone attempts to dismantle my family. I want her completely, utterly destroyed. Socially, financially, and legally."
"It's already done, Mr. Sterling," Marcus said quietly, a hint of awe and fear in his voice. "By noon today, Victoria Sterling will be a pariah. She won't be able to hire a parking attendant, let alone a defense attorney."
"Good. Clear the room," Julian stated, turning his back on the monitors.
Within seconds, the team of lawyers and fixers gathered their encrypted devices and silently filed out of the subterranean office, leaving Julian alone in the cool, humming silence of the servers. He ran a hand over his face, feeling the faint scratch of morning stubble along his jawline. The adrenaline that had fueled him through the night was finally beginning to ebb, leaving behind a profound, heavy exhaustion. But the burning rage in his chest had been extinguished, replaced by a cold, protective satisfaction.
He had kept his promise. Victoria was gone.
Taking a deep, centering breath, Julian left the war room and took the private elevator back up to the master suite. When the heavy oak doors clicked open, the harsh, calculating billionaire vanished completely.
Clara was sitting up in bed, propped against a mountain of pillows, staring out the window at the sprawling, manicured gardens of the estate. She turned her head as he walked in, offering a small, tired, but incredibly beautiful smile.
"You didn't sleep," she noted softly, her eyes tracing the faint, dark circles under his piercing blue eyes.
Julian walked over to the bed, sitting gently on the edge so as not to jostle her. He leaned in, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to her lips, before resting his forehead against hers. "I had a few loose ends to tie up," he murmured, his voice infinitely gentler than it had been in the bunker.
"Is it over?" Clara asked, a slight tremor of lingering anxiety in her voice. "Is she..."
"She will never, ever be a problem for us again, Clara," Julian said with absolute, unshakeable certainty. He took her hand, interlacing his fingers with hers, bringing her knuckles up to his lips. "She is being arrested as we speak. Her assets are seized. She has been entirely excommunicated from the family and the company. The threat is neutralized."
Clara let out a breath she felt like she had been holding since she was pushed on the stairs. She looked into Julian's eyes, seeing the sheer, terrifying magnitude of the power he wielded, and the absolute, unwavering devotion he had for her. He had systematically dismantled a billionaire's life in less than eight hours, all before the sun fully rose, simply because she had been threatened.
"Julian..." she whispered, overwhelmed by the sheer scale of his protection.
"I told you last night," he said, moving his hand to gently rest on the warm swell of her stomach. "You and this baby are my entire world. There is absolutely nothing I will not do, no line I will not cross, to ensure you are safe."
Clara leaned her head onto his shoulder, finding absolute peace in the strong, steady rhythm of his heartbeat. The immediate danger had passed, Victoria had been dealt with, and their child was safe.

But as Julian held his wife in the quiet sunlight of the master suite, his eyes drifted toward the bedroom door, his mind already calculating the next move on the chessboard. Victoria was just one head of the hydra. The rest of the extended Sterling family, old money and ruthless ambition, would soon hear of her spectacular downfall. They would realize that the king was fiercely guarding his queen, and that the succession of the empire was no longer up for debate.
The war with Victoria was over, but Julian knew the battle for the Sterling legacy had only just begun.
