Chapter 2 - The Weight of Ownership

The silence in the kitchen stretched for an eternity.

Elena stared at the heavy brown manila envelope resting on the cold marble.

Her fingers still clutched the white ceramic coffee cup, though the warmth had long since faded from the liquid inside.

"This is..." Margaret repeated, her voice steady and devoid of any warmth.

She slid the thick envelope an inch closer to Elena’s side of the island.

"What is this supposed to prove?" Elena asked, her voice finally breaking through the heavy tension with a defensive edge.

She forced her chin up, trying desperately to reclaim the authority she had felt only moments ago.

Margaret did not flinch at the challenge in her daughter-in-law's voice.

Instead, a cold, measured expression settled deeper into her features.

"Open it," Margaret instructed, her tone leaving no room for argument.

"You've been making grand plans for weeks without ever checking who actually holds the title to this estate."

Elena's breath hitched in her throat.

The red wrap dress suddenly felt too tight, constricting her chest as a cold realization began to creep in.

Slowly, with a trembling hand, Elena set her coffee cup down on the counter.

The porcelain made a sharp clinking sound against the stone surface.

She reached out, her fingertips brushing against the thick, coarse paper of the envelope.

The flap was unsealed, tucked neatly inside itself.

With hesitant movements, Elena pulled the contents out from within.

A stack of official legal documents slid into view, the bold header catching the morning light.

Elena's eyes scanned the first page, her pupils dilating in sheer disbelief.

"The deed..." Elena whispered, the words catching painfully in her dry throat.

"This house was transferred back to my sole ownership six months ago."

Margaret straightened her posture, looking down at Elena with an unyielding gaze.

"You and David assumed that because you live here, you manage everything," Margaret said, her voice dropping to a chilling register.

"You invited twenty-five people into a home that is legally not yours to lend."

Elena shook her head, taking a half-step back from the island.

"David said—" she started, her voice cracking under the sudden weight of the betrayal.

"David doesn't own a single brick of this foundation," Margaret interrupted smoothly.

"And neither do you."
