Chapter 8 – The Glass Cage

The Botanical Gardens at midnight were beautiful but eerie. The towering glass walls of the grand conservatory reflected the pale moonlight, illuminating the massive ferns and exotic orchids that filled the humid air inside.
Lily walked down the central gravel path, her footsteps echoing softly. She wore a light trench coat, her hands tucked into her pockets. Beneath her collar, a tiny microphone was taped to her skin, transmitting every sound to Agent Miller and a heavily armed FBI tactical team waiting in the shadows outside the glass walls.
Arthur was stationed near the rear exit, disguised as a groundskeeper, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm. He hated the idea of Lily being in danger, but she had insisted. I have to be the one to end this, she had told him. I have to face the ghost.
"You're very punctual, Lily."
Elias Vance stepped out from behind a massive weeping fig tree. He was flanked by two imposing men in dark suits. Vance looked entirely at ease, dressed in a sharp overcoat, a silver cane resting lightly in his right hand.
"I want this over," Lily said, her voice projecting strength. "I have the drive." She pulled a black USB stick from her pocket and held it up.
"Excellent," Vance smiled, stepping forward. "You are much braver than Richard ever gave you credit for. Toss it here."
"Not yet," Lily countered, standing her ground. "I want your word that the Haven Foundation will never be targeted. That you will never come near me or my family again."
Vance laughed softly, a dry, patronizing sound. "My dear, once I have my money, you and your little charity will cease to exist in my mind. You have my word. Now, the drive."
Lily hesitated for a fraction of a second, then tossed the drive onto the gravel between them.
One of the bodyguards stepped forward to pick it up, plugging it into a small tablet. He tapped the screen a few times, then looked up, his brow furrowed. "Mr. Vance... it's empty. It’s a dummy drive."
Vance’s polite smile vanished, replaced by a mask of cold fury. He looked at Lily. "That was a very foolish mistake."
"I disagree," Lily said, taking a deliberate step back.

"FBI! Nobody move!"
The glass doors of the conservatory burst open. Floodlights suddenly blazed to life, turning the dark greenhouse into blinding daylight. Agent Miller and her team poured into the room, weapons drawn, laser sights cutting through the humid mist to rest squarely on Vance and his men.
