CHAPTER 4: The Breaking Point

Police sirens cut through the night minutes later.

Marcus hadn’t hesitated.

One call.

That was all it took.

His in-laws were escorted out in silence, their empire crumbling with every step.

The guests disappeared like shadows, whispers trailing behind them.

The grand ballroom felt empty now.

Cold.

But for Marcus, everything had changed.

He knelt down slowly, placing Lily gently on her feet.

“It’s okay,” he whispered. “No one’s going to hurt you anymore.”

She looked at him.

Really looked at him this time.

Her small fingers reached out and touched his face, as if trying to remember something long forgotten.

“…Daddy?”

The word was barely a breath.

But it hit him harder than anything in his life.

Marcus broke.

“I’m here,” he whispered. “I’m here now.”
