Chapter 2: Pieces of the Past

Within minutes, the party dissolved into whispers and tension.
The waitress—Emily—sat trembling in a quiet corner room, clutching her apron.
The husband paced back and forth like a man on the edge of collapse.
“I need proof,” he muttered. “I need something more than hope.”
“You think I’m lying?” Emily asked, her voice fragile.
“I think…” he stopped, struggling for words. “I think I’ve been wrong before. I can’t afford to be wrong again.”
That hurt—but she understood.
“I don’t remember anything,” she said softly. “Just… a fire. Loud voices. And then nothing. The woman who raised me found me outside a hospital, she said.”
The husband froze.
“A fire?” he repeated.
Memories flooded back.
The night his son disappeared—
There had been a fire at a private estate.

Closed too quickly.
His hands clenched.
“They covered it up,” he whispered. “All of it.”
Meanwhile, across the hall, the glamorous wife stood alone, shaken.
For the first time, doubt crept into her carefully controlled world.
