Chapter 1: The Fracture Beneath the Surface

The music hadn’t stopped, but for Lily, the world had gone silent.
Her fingers trembled as she stared at the two halves of the locket—one resting in her palm, the other hanging from Vanessa’s neck. Identical. Perfectly broken. Perfectly matched.
“No… that’s not possible,” Lily whispered, her voice barely audible over the distant hum of the party.
Vanessa’s expression, once sharp with arrogance, faltered. “Where did you get that?” she demanded, though her voice lacked its usual bite.
“I’ve had it my whole life,” Lily replied. “My mother said it was the only thing she had left from before…”
Vanessa instinctively touched her own locket. “Mine too.”
The realization didn’t arrive all at once—it crashed into them, piece by piece, like waves tearing down a fragile shore.
Ethan stepped forward, confused. “What’s going on?”
Neither girl answered him.
Because in that moment, they weren’t rivals.
