Chapter 18: The Name Behind the Shadow

Three days later, the name surfaced.
Victoria Vance.
She didn’t file it directly. Of course she didn’t.
She used a proxy firm. A legal ghost.
But the pattern was unmistakable—the language, the strategy, the timing.
It was her.
Clara slammed the file shut. “After everything… she still—”
“Yes,” I interrupted gently. “She still needs control.”
We sat in silence for a moment.
Then I smiled.
Not bitterly.
Not angrily.
Just… knowingly.
“She picked the wrong battlefield.”
That afternoon, I called for a full internal audit—our own, not theirs. Every document. Every case. Every signature.
Not because I thought we’d done something wrong.
But because I wanted the truth documented so clearly that even manipulation couldn’t twist it.
Leo sat at the edge of my desk, watching me work.
“Are you in trouble?” he asked.
I paused.
Then I knelt beside him.
“No,” I said softly. “But sometimes, when you build something good… people test it.”
“Like a superhero?”
I smiled.
“Exactly like that.”
May you like
He nodded, satisfied.
“Then you’ll win.”
