Chapter 2: Power Meets Truth

Evelyn straightened her posture, recovering quickly, as women like her always did.

“I was correcting a mistake,” she replied coolly. “This event is private. Invitations are not… handed out at random.”

A ripple of uneasy laughter moved through a few corners of the room. Not many.

The mother tilted her head slightly.

“A mistake?”

Her calmness unsettled more people than shouting ever could.

“She’s a child,” the mother continued. “You called her ‘street trash.’ You tried to drag her out like she didn’t belong here. So I’ll ask you again—what exactly was the mistake?”

Evelyn’s lips tightened.

“I don’t need to justify myself to—”

“You do,” a voice interrupted.

All eyes turned.

Standing near the center of the room was the event’s host—a man known for his discretion, his influence, and his ability to read a room better than anyone alive.

And right now?

He wasn’t smiling.

“I invited them,” he said.

The silence that followed was heavier than before.

Evelyn blinked. “That’s… not possible.”

May you like

“It is,” he replied evenly. “And I suggest you think very carefully about your next words.”

For the first time that evening, doubt flickered across her face.
