The Empire Cracks

By the time the police arrived, the Hartwell name was already bleeding across headlines.

Scandal. Abuse. Coercion.

Daniel tried to leave through a side exit.

He didn’t make it.

Eleanor watched calmly as officers intercepted him, his protests growing louder, more desperate. Gone was the polished charm. What remained was raw panic.

“You ruined everything!” he shouted as they restrained him.

Eleanor tilted her head slightly.

“No,” she said softly. “You did.”

But Daniel wasn’t the real target.

His father stood near the back, surrounded by lawyers already whispering damage control strategies. Powerful. Untouchable.

Or so he thought.

Eleanor approached him with measured steps.

“You should’ve chosen a different family to threaten,” she said.

His eyes narrowed. “You think this ends here?”

Eleanor smiled faintly.

“I know it doesn’t.”

Because this wasn’t just revenge.

It was dismantling.

Over the following days, everything unraveled.

Financial investigations reopened.

Former employees came forward.

Victims—many of them—found their voices.

And at the center of it all was evidence Eleanor had been quietly gathering for months.

The empire didn’t collapse in one dramatic moment.

It rotted from within—until there was nothing left to hold it up.

Meanwhile, Lily remained hidden away in Eleanor’s penthouse.

Safe. Quiet.

Healing.

One evening, she stood by the window, watching the city lights flicker.

“I thought I had no choice,” she whispered.

Eleanor joined her.

“You always had a choice,” she said gently. “You just needed someone to stand with you.”

Lily turned, her eyes clearer now.

“And you
 you were never afraid?”

Eleanor paused.

Then, for the first time, she admitted the truth.

“I was terrified.”

A small, fragile smile formed on Lily’s lips.

“Then why did you do it?”

Eleanor looked out over the city—the battlefield she had just won.

“Because you’re my sister.”

And that was enough.
