chapter 9

It was Anna Evelyn Miller.

Date of birth: eighteen years earlier.

Arthur looked at Evelyn.

Her face had gone completely white.

“What is this?”

She whispered, “I never knew.”

The altered voice from the cane became clear.

Young.

Female.

“Neither did I.”

A girl stepped from the black sedan.

She had Arthur’s blue-gray eyes.

Evelyn’s dark hair.

Lily’s face.

Arthur’s heart stopped.

The girl looked at him with tears streaming down her cheeks.

“My name is Anna,” she said. “Margaret took me from the hospital and told Mom I died. Voss placed me inside Black Glass because he believed no one would ever search for a dead child.”

Voss backed away.

“That is impossible.”

Anna looked at him.

“You taught me how to make impossible things look like accidents.”

Federal agents appeared at the cemetery gates.

Not Voss’s people.

Anna’s.

Voss stared at Arthur, finally understanding.

Margaret’s arrest had not been the end of Black Glass.

It had been the key that unlocked its oldest secret.

Anna held up a small recorder.
