CHAPTER 3: THE FAMILY HE NEVER EXPECTED

Six months later, Daniel’s house felt completely different.
There were toys on the floor. Bottles in the sink. Tiny shoes by the door.
Life.
Real life.
“Lucy, bedtime!” Daniel called.
“Nooo!” she groaned from the living room.
He walked in to find her curled up next to Leo, who was giggling uncontrollably.
“Five more minutes,” she bargained.
“That’s what you said ten minutes ago.”
She grinned.
He shook his head, smiling despite himself.
“Alright. Two more minutes. Then bed.”
“Deal!”
Later that night, after both kids were finally asleep, Daniel sat alone in the quiet.
He thought about that day.
About how close they had come to slipping through the cracks.
About how a “routine call” had turned into something else entirely.
His phone buzzed.
A message from the social worker.
Adoption approved.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Then let out a slow breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding.
Footsteps padded softly behind him.
Lucy stood there, half-asleep, holding her blanket.
“Bad dream?” he asked gently.
She shook her head and walked over.
“…You’re not gonna leave, right?”
The question hit harder than anything.
Daniel pulled her into a hug.
“Never,” he said quietly. “I’m right here.”
She nodded against his chest.
“Okay… Dad.”
He froze.
Just for a second.
Then his arms tightened around her.
“Yeah,” he whispered. “Dad.”
Across the room, Leo stirred softly in his crib.
And for the first time in a long time—
May you like
Everything felt exactly the way it was supposed to be.
