CHAPTER 2: The Boardroom Reckoning

The boardroom was colder than Claire remembered.

Not in temperature—but in atmosphere.

Polished glass. Steel edges. Power concentrated in silence.

Ethan walked in ten minutes early, jaw tight, tie slightly crooked. He still believed this was a misunderstanding. A temporary system error. A glitch he could charm his way out of.

He froze when he saw Claire already seated at the head of the table.

Not beside it.

Not across from it.

At the head.

The chairman cleared his throat. “Let’s begin.”

Ethan laughed awkwardly. “Yeah, before we start—my access got locked this morning. IT must’ve—”

“Sit down, Ethan.”

Claire didn’t raise her voice.

She didn’t need to.

Something in her tone made the room shift.

Slowly, reluctantly, he sat.

The screen behind her lit up.

Footage.

The kitchen.

Linda tearing fabric. Insults. Mockery.

And Ethan… standing there.

Silent.

Ethan’s face drained of color. “Claire, this is—this is personal. This doesn’t belong here.”

“It does,” she said calmly. “Because this company has a morality clause. One you signed.”

The chairman nodded. “Executive conduct, both public and private, that damages the integrity of the company is grounds for immediate termination.”

Ethan looked around the room. “You’re serious? Over a family argument?”

Claire leaned forward slightly.

“This isn’t about a dress, Ethan. It’s about who you are when you think no one is watching.”

Silence.

Then the final slide appeared.

Ownership structure.

Claire Parker — 72% majority shareholder.

The room didn’t react.

They already knew.

Ethan didn’t.

“No…” he whispered. “That’s not—this isn’t—”

“You never asked,” Claire said. “You just assumed.”

The chairman folded his hands. “We will now proceed to a vote regarding the termination of Ethan Carter’s executive position.”

One by one, hands were raised.

Unanimous.

Ethan stared at Claire like he didn’t recognize her.

“You did this to me.”

She shook her head slightly.

“No, Ethan. I stopped protecting you.”

Security entered quietly.

No drama.

No shouting.

Just the quiet end of something that was never built on truth.

As he was escorted out, Ethan turned back one last time.

“You’re going to regret this.”

May you like

Claire met his eyes.

“No,” she said softly. “I already regret not doing it sooner.”
