Chapter 11: The Weight of Justice

"I spent my life building an empire of lies, believing I was protecting the people I loved. Today, I accept my cage, knowing that the truth has finally set them free."

The gavel fell with a heavy, wooden crack that echoed through the mahogany-paneled courtroom. Arthur Hawthorne stood perfectly still as the judge handed down a sentence that guaranteed he would never walk as a free man again. He did not flinch. He did not look at his lawyers. Instead, he turned his head slowly, finding his family in the crowded gallery.

Celeste sat between Elizabeth and Daniel. The rigid posture of a Navy Commander remained, but the hardened armor she had worn for years had softened. When Arthur’s eyes met hers, he offered a small, broken smile—a gesture of genuine peace.

"They're ready for him," Daniel whispered, leaning in close to Celeste.

Federal marshals stepped forward, gently but firmly taking Arthur by the arms. As they led him down the center aisle, the flashing cameras of the press corps illuminated the room like a lightning storm. Elizabeth reached out, her fingers lightly brushing Arthur’s sleeve as he passed.

"I'll wait," she whispered.

Arthur paused for a fraction of a second, his eyes glistening. "Don't wait, Elizabeth. Live."

As the heavy courtroom doors swung shut, swallowing her father into the depths of the justice system, Celeste felt a strange sense of absolute exhaustion wash over her. The adrenaline that had sustained her for the past fifteen years—through the academy, the fire aboard the USS Resolute, the chase for the Chairman, and the explosive collapse of Widow's Point—finally evaporated.

The war was over. But standing in the quiet aftermath, Celeste realized she had no idea how to live in peacetime.
