CHAPTER 2 — The Quiet Signal

The signal was almost invisible.

A slight tilt of Sarah Chen’s head.
A brief glance exchanged with her partner.
A silent decision.

But everything shifted.

Her partner stood, turned toward the driveway, and spoke calmly into his radio:
“Dispatch, we need police on scene. Possible assault.”

The words landed like thunder.

My mother gasped.
“Excuse me? That’s completely unnecessary—”

Sarah cut her off without raising her voice.
“It’s already necessary.”

For the first time, unease spread through the crowd like a slow infection.

Tyler stepped back from the railing.

Not dramatic.
Not obvious.

But I saw it.

He was retreating.

“Bridget,” Sarah said softly, leaning closer, “stay with me.”

“I can’t feel my legs,” I whispered.

Her eyes didn’t soften with pity.

They sharpened with urgency.

“I know,” she said. “We’re not wasting another second.”

Behind her, I heard my father’s voice rise again—louder now, desperate to regain control.

“This is a misunderstanding. My daughter is emotional—”

“Sir,” Sarah’s partner said firmly, “step away.”

The authority in his tone cut through everything my father had relied on his entire life.

Money.
Status.
Reputation.

None of it worked here.

Across the yard, Marcus froze near the back door.

Too late.

Two guests had already noticed him.
And more importantly—
so had the paramedics.

Tyler followed their gaze.

And for the first time…

real fear returned.
