âWHAT MONEY COULD NEVER BUILDâ

The hallway outside Eleanor Haleâs bedroom stayed still long after her whisper faded.
âYou want to know what your money builtâŠâ
Bennett didnât move.
The silence pressed against him like a weight he couldnât negotiate with, couldnât buy his way out of. For the first time in his life, numbers, systems, and control meant nothing.
Inside the room, Clara continued brushing Eleanorâs silver hair with careful, practiced gentleness. Every motion was slow, respectfulâlike she had done it not out of duty, but out of something deeper she never once put into words.
Eleanorâs eyes remained closed.
âNot the house,â she murmured softly, almost to herself. âNot the machines. Not the doctors.â
A faint breath.
âJust⊠this moment.â
Bennettâs hand tightened slightly against the doorframe.
He had built the mansion. The staff. The medical teams. The entire world surrounding her final days.
But he had never once been inside them.
Not like this.
Clara finally noticed him.
Her eyes flicked toward the doorwayâthen lowered immediately, as if acknowledging him would break something fragile already holding the room together.
She didnât stop brushing.

She didnât speak.
But her presence suddenly felt louder than anything Bennett had ever heard.
