The ballroom fell into a tense silence as the golden chandelier illuminated the elegant gathering.
Commander Elena Reed stood beneath the warm lights, wearing a white evening gown that carried the confidence of a woman who had survived impossible missions.
Across the room, Victoria Hale smiled with hidden cruelty.
"Everyone is wondering what you are trying to hide," Victoria whispered.
