Chapter 13 - The Man Behind the Glass.

The room broke into motion.
Margaret stayed on the phone with the bank.
Daniel ordered security to preserve Martin's devices and restrict his access credentials.
Arthur demanded a full audit of every transaction approved during the previous six months.
Martin remained strangely calm.
That calm frightened Emma more than shouting would have.
She watched from the hospital screen while Noah slept against her chest.
"What is the real transaction?" Arthur asked.
Martin buttoned his jacket.
"You still think this is about one bank account."
"Then explain it."
"No."
Martin looked toward the directors.
"You can suspend me."
"You can call attorneys."
"But by tonight, every lender, partner, and regulator connected to Hale Medical will receive a packet showing disputed ownership, questionable leadership, and a founder who lost control in a maternity ward."
Arthur understood.
Martin's goal was not only to take money.
It was to force a crisis severe enough to collapse the company's negotiating position.
Someone could then buy assets cheaply while the family fought over control.
Margaret asked who the buyer was.
Martin said nothing.
Claire had been listening from Emma's room.
She suddenly stood.
"I know the name."
Emma looked at her.
Claire opened her phone and searched old messages.
Months earlier, Don had mentioned a company called Northbridge Care Partners.
He said it was interested in expanding hospital properties across the Midwest.
At the time, Claire thought Don was discussing a future job.
Now the name felt different.
Margaret searched the audit database.
Northbridge had approached Hale Medical twice in three years with acquisition offers Arthur rejected.
Its most recent offer had been eighteen months earlier.
Martin had led the internal valuation review.
Arthur's face darkened.
"He knew every weak point in our debt structure."
Claire found another message.
Don had written, NORTHBRIDGE SAYS MK CAN MAKE THE BOARD ASK FOR A RESCUE.
Emma read the line aloud.
Martin's eyes moved toward the conference monitor.
He finally looked worried.
Margaret asked Claire to preserve the phone and not delete anything.
Claire nodded.
Then her phone rang.
The caller ID showed Don.
Everyone froze.
Margaret told Claire she did not have to answer.
Claire looked at Emma.
Emma said nothing.
The choice belonged to Claire.
Claire answered and put the call on speaker after telling Don he was being heard by others.
Don stayed silent for several seconds.
Then he said, "Claire, leave the hospital."
"Why?"
"Because this is bigger than you think."
Claire's voice shook, but she remained standing.
"Did Martin pay you to get Emma's signature?"
Don exhaled.
"I was supposed to get a voluntary proxy."
"Did you know about the fake medical statements?"
"Not at first."
Arthur leaned toward the speaker.
"When did you know?"
Don recognized his voice.
"After the petition was drafted."
"And you filed it anyway."
Don did not answer.
Emma felt something inside her finally detach from the man she had married.
There would be no explanation that restored what he had chosen to do.
Claire asked the question everyone needed answered.
"Who is Northbridge working with?"
Don's reply came quietly.
"Martin."
Martin closed his eyes for one second.
Don continued.
"But Martin isn't the one who started it."
Arthur's voice became very still.
"Who did?"
Don said a name.

Every director in the boardroom turned toward Susan Park.
"Susan."
