Chapter 6 - The Second Folder.
The court officer did not come upstairs.
Hospital counsel met him in the lobby and accepted the papers on Emma's behalf.
Don remained near the entrance, but security kept him away from the maternity elevators.
The new filing demanded immediate access to Noah and Grace for what Don called a family welfare assessment.
Margaret read the request and nearly laughed.
"He is trying to create the appearance that you're blocking him from his children."
Emma looked at the sleeping twins.
"He brought another woman into my room after they were born."
"Courts care about evidence more than outrage," Margaret said.
"So we give them evidence."
At seven fifty, Arthur left for the coffee shop with Margaret and Daniel.
Emma remained behind because her doctor would not discharge her before noon.
At eight twelve, Claire Benson returned to Hale Memorial.
This time she asked to see Emma without Don.
Emma allowed it.
Claire entered wearing the same maroon dress but with a long gray coat over it.
Her face looked tired.
She carried a slim black folder against her chest.
"I thought you should hear this from me," Claire said.
Emma kept her voice calm.
"Start with how long."
Claire understood.
"Eight months."
Emma glanced at Claire's pregnancy.
"And he told you what?"
"That you had been separated for almost a year."
Claire swallowed.
"He said the twins happened because you were trying to save the marriage."
Emma felt the insult hit, but she refused to let it show.
"That was another lie."
Claire nodded.
"I know that now."
She placed the folder on the bedside table.
Inside were printed messages between Don and someone saved in his phone as MK.
Most of the messages concerned dates, share percentages, legal forms, and something repeatedly called the succession trigger.
One message from MK read, THE TWINS MAKE TIMING CRITICAL.
Another said, ONCE SHE SIGNS, YOU HOLD THE VOTES UNTIL REVIEW.
Emma looked up.
"MK is Martin Kessler."
"I think so," Claire said.
Claire explained that Don had told her he was helping reorganize Hale Medical Group before Arthur retired.
He promised Claire they would move to New York after the reorganization.
He also promised that he would finally tell Emma the truth after the twins were born.
"Then yesterday I found the drafts on his tablet," Claire said.
"I realized he was planning to make you look incapable."
Emma's voice turned cold.
"And you still came here with him."
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
"Because he told me the document was a divorce settlement and that you had already agreed."
Emma looked away.
Claire pushed the folder closer.
"I was wrong to believe him."
"That doesn't make this easy for me."
"I know."
For several seconds, neither woman spoke.
Then Claire removed one final page.
It was a wire confirmation from a private consulting company to Don's personal account.
The sender was Kessler Strategic Advisory.
The amount was four hundred thousand dollars.
The reference line said SUCCESSION PREPARATION.
Emma stared at it.
"He was paid."
Claire nodded.
"And there's more."
She pointed to the date.
The transfer occurred two days after Emma announced her pregnancy to the family.
Emma felt something inside her become very still.
This had not begun because she was weak after childbirth.
Her pregnancy had triggered the plan.
Claire looked toward the twins.
"Don kept saying your children changed the ownership map."
Emma frowned.
"What ownership map?"
Before Claire could answer, Emma's phone rang.
Arthur was calling from the courthouse district.
His voice was urgent.
"Rebecca is here."
Emma sat straighter.
"What did she say?"
Arthur paused.
"She says your signature was copied."

Then his tone changed.
"But she also says Don wasn't the person who ordered it."
