Chapter 6: Shadows of Desperation

The rain began to fall late that afternoon.

Thick gray clouds rolled over the hills, casting a heavy shadow across the resort grounds.

Elena stood by her office window, watching the droplets streak down the glass.

Her phone rang, breaking the quiet rhythm of the storm.

She picked it up and saw an unknown, restricted number.

She swiped the screen and pressed it to her ear.

"Elena," a strained, ragged voice hissed through the speaker.

It was Julian.

He sounded completely unhinged, stripped of his usual polished arrogance.

"You think you've won everything, don't you?" Julian spat.

"You think you can just lock me out of my life's work?"

Elena remained entirely calm.

She did not raise her voice or show any sign of fear.

"It was never your life's work, Julian," Elena replied evenly.

"It was a house of cards built on deception."

"I'm coming back there," Julian threatened, his breathing heavy and erratic.

"You can't keep me away from what belongs to me."

"If you step foot on these grounds, Julian, security will detain you immediately," Elena warned.

"And federal authorities will be notified within seconds."

A harsh, bitter laugh echoed on the line.

"You won't call the authorities."

"You wouldn't dare drag our names through the public mud."

"Try me," Elena said softly.

"My patience for your games expired the moment you handed me that contract."

The line went dead with a sharp click.

Elena lowered the phone slowly.

She felt a cold prickle of caution, knowing a desperate man was capable of anything.

She immediately dialed the head of security's extension.

"David, double all perimeter patrols."

"Mr. Thorne is making erratic threats."

"Understood, Ms. Vance," David responded instantly.

"We have eyes on all entry points."

"Nobody gets through without authorization."

Elena thanked him and hung up.

She walked back to her desk and opened a secondary digital file.

It contained records of local vendors Julian had stiffed during his expansion.

Small family businesses that were pushed to the brink of bankruptcy.

Julian had bled them dry to fund his lavish lifestyle.

Elena pulled up the finance ledger.

"Marcus," she called out toward the open office door.

Marcus stepped inside immediately.

"Yes, Ms. Vance?"

"Prepare a list of all local suppliers affected by Julian’s delayed payments."

"I want every single one of them paid in full by tomorrow morning."

"With interest," she added firmly.

Marcus smiled, a look of genuine pride crossing his face.

"Right away, Ms. Vance."

"They've been waiting a long time for justice."

As Marcus left, Elena looked out at the pouring rain.

Julian was fighting for an illusion that was already dead.

She was busy building a future that would last.
