Chapter 8: Shadows Closing In

The clock on the wall ticked past midnight.

The resort was quiet, bathed in the soft glow of security lights.

Most of the staff had long since gone home to rest.

Only the night shift patrolled the quiet corridors.

A sleek black car crept slowly up the back service road.

It parked near the old delivery entrance, half-hidden in the deep shadows.

Julian stepped out into the damp night air.

His face was pale, his eyes wide and bloodshot with exhaustion and rage.

He wore a dark hoodie pulled low over his forehead.

He bypassed the main gates completely, knowing they were heavily guarded.

Instead, he headed for a side service door he knew well from his past days.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out an old master key card.

It was a card he thought he would never need again.

He swiped it rapidly through the electronic lock.

The red light flickered briefly.

Then, it turned green with a soft, mechanical click.

Julian slipped inside the building like a ghost.

He moved quickly through the darkened hallways, avoiding the main cameras.

His destination was the executive suite on the top floor.

He believed Elena would be working late alone, as she often did.

He gripped a small, heavy legal document in his coat pocket.

It was a fraudulent retraction form he intended to force her to sign under threat.

He reached the top-floor landing without encountering a single guard.

He felt a surge of arrogant confidence return to his chest.

He thought he was smarter than everyone else.

He walked quietly down the carpeted hallway toward the double doors of the office.

The door was unlocked.

A faint line of warm light streamed out from beneath the crack.

Julian’s heart hammered furiously against his ribs.

He raised his hand and pushed the door open.

It swung inward silently.

He stepped into the plush office, ready to pounce.

"It's over, Elena," Julian whispered harshly, pulling out the paper.

He stopped dead in his tracks.

The desk chair was turned away from him, facing the large window.

A figure sat quietly in the chair.

The figure slowly spun around to face him.

It was not Elena.

It was David, the head of security, flanked by two officers.

Julian stumbled backward, his breath catching in his throat.

"Looking for someone else, Mr. Thorne?" David asked calmly.

Julian spun around to flee through the door.

Two more guards blocked the exit entirely.

The trap had been waiting for him all along.
