Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The grand ballroom of the Belvedere Hotel shimmered under the light of a dozen crystal chandeliers.

Billionaire Arthur Pendelton adjusted the collar of his tailored navy tuxedo.

He was a man who commanded every room he entered.

Tonight was supposed to be a celebration of his life’s philanthropic work.

Instead, an undercurrent of tension hummed beneath the polite jazz music.

Evelyn Croft stood closely by his side.

She wore a breathtaking maroon evening gown that swept the marble floor.

Her smile was perfect, but it never quite reached her eyes.

A few feet away stood Maya Vance.

Maya was dressed in the dark grey uniform of the event staff.

However, she was far from a simple server.

She was an elite private security contractor hired to protect Arthur.

Maya kept her eyes scanning the crowd with razor-sharp precision.

She remembered noticing Evelyn lingering just a little too long by the champagne fountain earlier.

A waiter offered Arthur a beautifully cut crystal goblet.

Arthur smiled politely and reached for the drink.

He raised the glass toward his lips to take a sip.

Maya’s trained instincts screamed that something was terribly wrong.

She did not hesitate.

Maya lunged across the polished marble floor.

Her hand struck Arthur’s wrist with forceful precision.

The crystal goblet flew from his grasp.

It shattered violently against the pristine white floor.

The loud crash silenced the nearby guests instantly.

Arthur froze in shock.

Maya stepped squarely between Arthur and the spilled liquid.

"Stop, there's something in it," Maya declared sharply.

Evelyn immediately recoiled in dramatic fashion.

She threw her hands up in exaggerated outrage to deflect the attention.

"She could have injured all of us!" Evelyn yelled defensively.

Maya completely ignored the woman's theatrical outburst.

She calmly raised her left wrist.

A sleek, high-tech smartwatch glowed against her skin.

Maya tapped the screen twice to pull up the network.

A hidden security feed from the catering room began to play.

The digital footage was crystal clear.

It showed Evelyn slipping a small vial of clear liquid into Arthur's specific goblet.

Maya held her wrist up for Arthur to see.

"She prepared your drink herself," Maya stated with chilling calm.

Evelyn gasped loudly.

The mask of confident innocence fell completely from her face.

Pure panic replaced her perfectly practiced smile.

Arthur slowly turned his head to look at Evelyn.

His expression morphed from confusion into a lethal, quiet rage.

He stepped aggressively into her personal space.

His eyes locked onto hers with terrifying intensity.

"Who else knew I would drink from that glass?!" Arthur demanded.

The gala's festive atmosphere was officially dead.

A dangerous new game had just begun.
