Chapter 8 - The Final Transfer

The progress bar on the encrypted laptop screen crawled slowly toward one hundred percent.
Arthur watched the bright green line with unblinking focus.
The heavy silence in the penthouse was broken only by the ragged breathing of the tied-up assassin.
Maya stood near the shattered window, watching the flashing red and blue lights approaching far below.
"The police have breached the lobby," Maya reported calmly.
"They are securing the executive elevators now."
The laptop suddenly chimed with a crisp, cheerful electronic tone.
A bold confirmation message flashed across the center of the dark monitor.
The multi-billion dollar transfer to the global charitable trust was officially complete.
Marcus Sterling had just lost everything he had violently conspired to steal.
Arthur leaned back heavily in his leather executive chair.
The immense weight of his corporate empire finally lifted from his aging shoulders.
He looked over at Maya, his expression softening into genuine relief.
"It is officially done," Arthur stated softly.
"The money belongs entirely to the public trust now."
Maya offered him a rare, genuine smile of approval.
Heavy boots suddenly pounded down the exterior hallway outside the penthouse.
"Police, open the door!" a booming voice commanded from the corridor.
Maya safely holstered her weapon and moved gracefully to unlock the heavy suite doors.
A swarm of uniformed officers flooded into the room with their weapons drawn.

Arthur stood up smoothly to greet the arriving detectives.
He knew there would be endless questions, but the worst of the nightmare was over.
