Chapter 12 - Anna Comes Home.

Priya locked the study door while Daniel shoved the ledgers back into the wall safe.
Margaret stood frozen beside Henry's desk.
"Is there another way out?"
Priya asked.
Margaret nodded toward a narrow door hidden behind a bookcase.
"Service stairs."
Daniel stared at her.
"How many secrets does this house have?"
"More than I wanted."
They moved quickly.
Daniel carried the recorder and trust amendment beneath his jacket.
Priya took one external drive and left the other in the safe.
Margaret relocked the steel door and pulled the painting into place.
The study handle rattled behind them.
Curtis struck the door once with something heavy.
"Move."
Priya pushed them into the service stairwell.
They descended in darkness toward the kitchen level.
At the bottom, Daniel heard another man speaking in the foyer.
Curtis had not come alone.
Priya led Margaret through a pantry door toward the garage.
Daniel stopped.
"They're here for the evidence."
"Which is why we're leaving with it."
"If they search the safe, they'll know we took something."
"They already know."
A flashlight appeared at the far end of the kitchen corridor.
Daniel ran.
They reached the garage and climbed into Margaret's old station wagon because its keys were hanging beside the door.
Priya drove through the rear gate while a man emerged from the house and shouted after them.
Daniel looked back.
Curtis stood beneath the rain with his phone pressed to his ear.
"Where do we go?"
Margaret asked.
"Not the police."
Priya said it immediately.
Daniel agreed.
Someone had triggered police, CPS, reporters, and regulators with perfect timing.
Until they knew how deep the network went, official channels were not automatically safe.
Margaret looked out the window.
"Anna used to hide at Saint Catherine's when she was a teenager."
Daniel remembered the old church near the river.
"Why would she go there now?"
"Because Henry funded their shelter anonymously for twenty years."
Daniel stared at his mother.
"Of course he did."
Saint Catherine's had closed its public shelter three years earlier, but an elderly priest still lived in the attached rectory.
Father Michael Reyes opened the door before they knocked.
"You're late."
Daniel stopped.
"You were expecting us?"
The priest looked past him at Margaret.
"I was expecting someone."
He led them through a narrow hallway into the chapel.
A woman sat in the front pew beneath a statue of Mary.
Her dark hair was unwashed.
A bruise covered one side of her jaw.
Her left wrist was wrapped in gauze.
Daniel knew her before she turned around.
Anna.
Rachel.
His sister.
For several seconds neither of them moved.
Eight years collapsed between them and somehow remained completely intact.
Daniel had imagined this reunion a thousand times after learning she might be alive.
In none of those versions did she look at him with fear.
"Where's Lily?"
Those were her first words.
"Safe."
"Where?"
"West Monroe placement center."
Anna stood abruptly.
"No."
"I tried to stop them."
"You let the state take her?"
"The building was on fire."
"You should have taken her and run."
Daniel's anger rose.
"I didn't know if you wanted me near her because you called and told her to stay away from me."
Anna looked away.
"I had to."
"Why?"
"Because Curtis had me in the car when I made that call."
Daniel went still.
Anna touched the bruise on her jaw.
"He told me if I warned you about him, he'd go back for Lily."
"So you warned her about me."
"I needed you angry enough to keep asking questions and Lily scared enough not to trust anyone easily."
Daniel laughed in disbelief.
"You used a six-year-old as part of a plan."
"I used the only thirty seconds I had."
"She's been sleeping in a condemned building."
"Because the apartment Bright Steps moved us into was never paid for."
Anna's voice broke.
"The landlord threw us out after three weeks."
Margaret began crying quietly.
Anna saw her mother and stiffened.
"Don't."
Margaret stopped approaching.
"I thought you were dead for six years."
"You accepted that because it was easier than challenging him."
"Anna."
"No."
Daniel stepped between them.
"We can hate each other later."
Anna's eyes flashed.
"I don't hate you."
"You told your daughter our family was dead."
"Because for most of my life, being a Mercer was dangerous."
The words silenced him.
Priya placed the trust amendment on the pew.
"We found this."
Anna read the first page.
Her face changed.
"He actually signed it."
"You knew about it?"
"Henry told me he would restructure control if I brought him proof."
"Did you?"
"Not enough."
Anna sat down again.
She explained that eight years earlier she had discovered relocation money disappearing from a project in Eastwood.
She accused Henry because his signature appeared on the transfers.
Henry denied stealing the funds but admitted he had approved the nonprofit structure that made the theft possible.
He told her to stay quiet while he investigated.
She refused.
Two days later someone broke into her apartment.
A week after that her brakes failed.
Henry arranged a false death story and sent her away under a new identity.
"Who tried to kill you?"
Daniel asked.
"Henry thought Thomas Bell."
The name landed with terrible simplicity.
"Why Thomas?"
"Because he built the network."
Anna looked at Priya.
"Bright Steps was his idea. Northstar was one of the funnels. There were at least nine others."
"And Julian?"
Daniel asked.
Anna hesitated.
"Julian is guilty of falsifying records and hiding transfers."
"So he's part of it."
"Not the way you think."
Daniel clenched his jaw.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
"Henry forced Julian to keep processing certain transactions so Thomas wouldn't know they were investigating him."
"That makes no sense."
"It makes ugly sense."
Anna's eyes filled with anger.
"They let money keep disappearing because they wanted to trace where it went."
Daniel stared at her.
"They sacrificed tenants for evidence."
"Yes."
The word hung in the chapel.
Daniel suddenly understood why Anna had never forgiven Henry.
Even if his father had not stolen the money, he had allowed innocent families to keep suffering while he built a case in secret.
"And Julian kept doing it after Dad died."
"Because Thomas became board chairman."
Priya folded her arms.
"Why not go to federal investigators?"
Anna laughed without humor.
"I did."
Everyone looked at her.
"Three years ago."
"What happened?"
"The investigator I met retired two weeks later. My documents disappeared. A month after that, Lily's daycare address showed up in a threatening email."
Daniel felt sick.
"So you stopped."
"I changed tactics."
Anna reached beneath the pew and pulled out a small canvas bag.
Inside were photocopies, receipts, and a tiny digital recorder.
"Tuesday I finally got something Henry never had."
"What?"
"Thomas speaking plainly."
She handed Daniel the recorder.
"Julian arranged the meeting because he decided he was done being afraid."
Daniel pressed play.
Thomas Bell's voice came through immediately.
"Once Daniel is charged, the board seat falls to me."
Julian answered.
"And the girl?"
Thomas was silent for two seconds.
Then he said the sentence that made Margaret cover her mouth.
"Children disappear into systems every day."
Daniel stopped the recording.
His hands shook with rage.
Anna looked at him.
"Now you understand why I told Lily not to go with you."
"Because Thomas was framing me."
"Because if he could make you look like the danger, every system in the city would help him separate her from the only adult with enough power to fight back."
Daniel looked toward the dark chapel doors.
"Then we get Lily now."
Anna stood.
Father Michael entered from the hallway before they could move.
His face was pale.
"You need to see the news."
He turned on a television in the rectory.
A reporter stood outside the West Monroe placement center.
Emergency vehicles filled the background.
The headline beneath her read THREE CHILDREN MISSING FROM STATE FACILITY.
Anna made a strangled sound.
The reporter continued.
"Authorities say six-year-old Lily Ward and two other children disappeared approximately twenty minutes ago after an unidentified woman presented forged transfer documents."
Daniel looked at Anna.
Anna looked at Daniel.

Then Daniel's phone rang.
Thomas Bell was calling.
