Chapter 14 - The Table by the Window.

Bell & Ash had closed to the public at ten.

At ten-fifteen every light inside was still on.

Daniel stood across the rain-slicked street beneath the same awning where he had first seen Lily.

Federal officers were positioned in nearby buildings and unmarked vehicles.

Ortega had objected to Daniel approaching the restaurant.

Thomas had solved that disagreement by calling Daniel directly.

"Come inside."

Daniel looked through the glowing window.

Thomas Bell sat at a table near the back.

Lily sat across from him.

The white styrofoam container rested between them.

Her gray hoodie was torn at one shoulder.

She looked furious rather than afraid.

"Let her walk out first."

Daniel said.

"Then I lose my leverage."

"You already lost the warehouse."

"Temporary inconvenience."

"Federal agents have your recording."

Thomas chuckled.

"A recording obtained by a fugitive woman who used a false identity for years. Any competent lawyer will enjoy that."

"They have the trust documents."

"Copies."

Daniel glanced toward Ortega.

The agent shook his head slightly.

They did not know whether Thomas had a weapon or someone else inside.

"What do you want now?"

"The same thing."

"My confession."

"And Henry's original amendment."

"Why does the original matter if copies exist?"

Thomas's silence confirmed the answer.

He believed he could challenge copies.

He believed destroying the original would delay transfer of control long enough to protect his network.

"Come in, Daniel."

The call ended.

Daniel entered through the front door alone.

The restaurant smelled of bread, coffee, and cleaning solution.

The contrast with Bell Street was almost obscene.

Thomas wore a navy suit and no tie.

A red mark showed on his left hand where Lily had apparently bitten him.

Daniel noticed it immediately.

Lily noticed him noticing.

She almost smiled.

"Are you hurt?"

Daniel asked.

"No."

Thomas sighed.

"Children are exhausting."

Lily glared at him.

"You're old."

"Lily."

Daniel said her name gently.

"It's true."

Thomas actually laughed.

For a moment the scene looked absurdly normal.

Then Daniel saw the pistol resting on the chair beside Thomas's right leg.

"Sit."

Thomas said.

Daniel sat beside Lily rather than across from her.

Thomas did not object.

"The document?"

Daniel removed a sealed envelope from his coat.

"My statement first."

Thomas slid a typed page across the table.

Daniel read it.

The statement admitted he knowingly diverted relocation funds through Mercer Community Reserve II.

It claimed Julian Cross had acted under Daniel's direct instruction.

It claimed Rachel Ward had attempted to extort him.

It described the Bell Street children as unlawful occupants Daniel had tried to conceal after the fire.

Daniel looked up.

"You wrote everything except the part where I murdered someone."

Thomas's expression did not change.

"We can add it."

Lily looked at Daniel.

"Don't sign."

Thomas reached toward the pistol.

"She talks too much."

Daniel picked up the pen.

"If I sign, she leaves with Anna."

"Eventually."

"No."

"You are not negotiating from strength."

Daniel set the pen down.

"Neither are you."

Thomas's eyes narrowed.

"You think agents outside will save you?"

Daniel said nothing.

Thomas smiled.

"I know they're there."

Lily looked toward the windows.

"Then why are you still here?"

Thomas turned to her.

"Because adults with badges care about rules."

Lily looked at Daniel.

"He says adults like it's a disease."

Daniel almost laughed again.

Thomas's smile vanished.

"Open the envelope."

Daniel did.

Inside was the original-looking trust amendment.

Thomas reached across the table.

Daniel held it back.

"Tell me why my father died."

Thomas's eyes went cold.

"Heart attack."

"You were at the house."

A flicker.

"Who told you that?"

"Henry."

For the first time Thomas looked genuinely unsettled.

Daniel continued.

"He recorded the night you came."

Thomas leaned back.

"Your father recorded everyone."

"Did you threaten him?"

"Many people threatened Henry."

"Did you kill him?"

Thomas laughed.

"You want the world to be simpler than it is."

"Answer me."

"No."

Daniel studied him.

"Then what happened?"

Thomas looked at the document in Daniel's hand.

"Henry had been sick for months. He refused to slow down. That night he accused me of stealing from people he had already displaced."

His voice sharpened.

"Do you understand the hypocrisy?"

"So you admitted it."

"I told him he created the machine."

Thomas leaned forward.

"I merely learned how to use it."

Daniel heard movement in his earpiece, barely audible.

Ortega had placed a tiny transmitter beneath Daniel's collar.

They were recording every word.

Thomas continued without knowing.

"Henry offered me one chance to return the money and resign."

"And you refused."

"I told him exposing me would expose the entire company."

"Then?"

Thomas's mouth twisted.

"Then the mighty Henry Mercer reached for his chest and collapsed before I could finish the conversation."

Daniel felt a strange grief.

His father had died during a confrontation, but perhaps not by murder.

Thomas had simply watched.

"Did you call for help?"

Thomas looked at him.

The silence lasted too long.

"Did you call?"

"Julian did."

Daniel understood.

Thomas had allowed precious minutes to pass.

Maybe Henry would have died anyway.

Maybe he would not.

The uncertainty was its own cruelty.

"The document."

Thomas said.

Daniel slid it across.

Thomas snatched it and examined the signatures.

Then he took a lighter from his pocket.

Daniel did not move.

Thomas flicked the flame.

Lily suddenly grabbed the white container and slammed it down over Thomas's hand.

The lighter flew across the floor.

Thomas shouted.

Daniel lunged across the table.

The pistol hit the floor.

Lily kicked it under another table with both feet.

The front door exploded inward as federal agents entered.

Thomas twisted beneath Daniel and reached for the burning document.

Ortega tackled him before he could grab it.

Within seconds Thomas Bell was handcuffed on the restaurant floor.

Daniel pulled Lily into his arms.

For the first time she did not resist.

She buried her wet face against his white shirt.

"Mom?"

"Outside."

"Really?"

"Really."

Anna ran through the doorway before the agents could stop her.

Lily screamed one word.

"Mom!"

They collided beside the table.

Anna dropped to her knees and held her daughter so tightly both of them shook.

Daniel stepped away.

He thought the worst part was over.

Then Ortega picked up the trust amendment Thomas had nearly burned.

He examined the seal.

His expression changed.

"Daniel."

"What?"

Ortega held the document toward the light.

"This isn't the original."

Daniel looked at Priya, who had just entered behind the agents.

She shook her head.

"I gave you the original from the safe."

Daniel felt his stomach drop.

Margaret had handed him the sealed packet before they left Saint Catherine's.

He had never opened it again.

Anna stood slowly.

"Then where is the real one?"

May you like

Daniel turned toward the door.

His mother was gone.
