Chapter 6: The Doors That Changed Everything

The doors didn’t just open.
They exploded inward.
The sound cracked through the ballroom like a gunshot, silencing the last trembling note of the quartet. Every head turned. Every breath stalled.
Victor didn’t.
He stood over Claire, one hand still half-raised, his smile frozen between triumph and irritation.
Men in dark suits flooded the room—not security. Not staff.
Federal agents.
“Victor Hale,” one of them called out, voice sharp and controlled. “Step away from her. Now.”
For the first time that night, Victor hesitated.
Claire lay on the marble floor, her cheek pressed against its cold surface. Her vision blurred, but she saw it—the flicker in his eyes. Not fear.
Calculation.
Nora broke through the crowd and dropped beside Claire.
“Claire—stay with me. Stay with me.”
“I’m fine,” Claire whispered, though the copper taste in her mouth said otherwise.
Above them, Victor slowly lowered his hand.
“This is a misunderstanding,” he said smoothly, turning toward the agents. “You’ve just interrupted a private event.”
The lead agent didn’t blink.
“We have a warrant.”
A ripple moved through the crowd—shock, whispers, phones quietly lifted.
Victor’s smile returned, thinner now.
“For what, exactly?”
The agent stepped forward.
“Fraud. Conspiracy. Financial manipulation. And obstruction tied to Samuel Hart’s estate.”
The name hit the room like a second explosion.
Claire closed her eyes.
It was happening.
Victor looked down at her.
Just for a second.
And in that second, the mask slipped.
“You did this,” he murmured.
May you like
Claire met his gaze.
“Yes.”
