The guests began to whisper.

The Maid stood frozen, unsure if she had just saved someone… or destroyed her own life.

“I apologize, sir,” she said softly, lowering her gaze. “I didn’t know—”

“You knew enough,” the Patriarch interrupted.

She looked up.

“You knew right from wrong,” he continued. “That’s rarer in this room than wealth.”

A faint murmur spread again.

The Wealthy Woman clenched her jaw. “You’re praising a servant? In front of everyone?”

“I’m acknowledging courage,” he said. “Something money cannot purchase.”

Her lips tightened. “You will regret humiliating me.”
