Chapter 1: The Morning It Began

The morning light filtering through the sheer curtains of the master bedroom was soft, offering no warning of the nightmare about to unfold. Arthur stood in front of the mirror, adjusting the collar of his crisp, light blue button-down shirt. His wife, Eleanor, sat on the edge of the bed in her white silk robe, sipping her coffee. They were a picture of suburban tranquility, living in a sprawling, softly lit home in an affluent neighborhood.

But that tranquility was shattered by a sound that would freeze the blood of any parent.

It was a piercing, guttural scream echoing from down the hallway. It belonged to Leo, their eight-year-old son.

Arthur dropped his tie. Eleanor gasped, her coffee mug clattering onto the nightstand, spilling brown liquid across the mahogany. Without a word, Arthur sprinted out of the room, his dress shoes slipping slightly on the hardwood floor before catching traction on the plush hall runner.

He burst into Leo's room. The boy wasn't in his bed. He was writhing on the thick carpet, his knees pulled tightly to his chest. He wore his favorite light grey long-sleeve pajamas, now twisted and soaked with sudden sweat. Leo’s hands were clutching his stomach with desperate, white-knuckled force.

"Leo! Buddy, what is it? What's wrong?" Arthur dropped to his knees, sliding across the floor to pull his son into his arms. The boy felt feverish, his small frame trembling violently.

Leo’s face was pale, his eyes wide with a terror that Arthur had never seen before. Tears streamed down the boy's cheeks as he looked up at his father.

"Cut open my stomach, Dad!" Leo sobbed, his voice cracking with agony and panic. "Please! Something is moving inside me!"

Arthur’s heart slammed against his ribs. He pressed a hand to Leo’s abdomen, trying to feel for an appendix rupture or a hernia, but the boy’s muscles were locked tight. "Okay, buddy, okay. I’ve got you. We’re going to get help."
