Chapter 6: Shifting Shadows

The fluorescent lights of the police precinct buzzed with a low, irritating hum. Arthur sat across from Detective Miller, a seasoned investigator with a tired face and a sharp, calculating gaze. On the metal desk between them sat a thin manila folder.

After leaving Eleanor at the hospital to watch over a sleeping Leo, Arthur had driven straight to the precinct. The world had inverted itself. The monster was the savior, and the real threat was still out there.

"Her real name is Dr. Brenda Collins," Detective Miller said, opening the folder and sliding a photograph toward Arthur. It showed Brenda, looking years younger, wearing a white lab coat. "She isn't a registered nurse. She’s a former toxicologist and medical researcher. She lost her medical license three years ago after breaking into a pharmaceutical lab to expose a cover-up regarding a lucrative, but dangerous, experimental drug."

Arthur stared at the photo. "She infiltrated my house. She forged her nursing credentials to get hired by us. Why?"

"Because of who was treating your son," Miller replied, leaning forward and resting his elbows on the desk. "Dr. Julian Aris."

The name hit Arthur like a physical blow. Dr. Aris was charming, expensive, and highly recommended by their elite social circle. He made house calls. He prescribed exclusive, "cutting-edge" nutritional supplements for Leo's mystery illness.

"Dr. Aris was the lead researcher on the drug trial that Dr. Collins tried to expose," Miller explained. "When Collins was blacklisted, she started tracking Aris's private practice. She believed he was intentionally keeping wealthy clients' children mildly sick—poisoning them with undetectable heavy metals—so he could charge exorbitant fees to 'treat' their chronic, mysterious illnesses with his proprietary supplements."

Arthur felt a sickening wave of nausea wash over him. He remembered Aris patting Leo’s head, smiling warmly as he handed Arthur bottles of expensive liquid vitamins. He remembered writing five-figure checks, thanking the man for his dedication.

"Brenda realized Leo was his latest victim," Arthur murmured, the pieces snapping together with horrifying clarity. "She couldn't go to the police because she had no proof and a criminal record. No one would believe her."

"Exactly," Miller nodded grimly. "She forged her way into your home to gather evidence. But when she realized how high Leo's toxicity levels were getting, she knew she was out of time. She administered the chelating agent to force a medical crisis, knowing it would expose the Thallium in a hospital setting and ultimately lead to her arrest."

Arthur stood up, his chair scraping loudly against the linoleum floor. His hands were curled into tight fists, his knuckles white. The fear that had paralyzed him that morning had evaporated, replaced by a cold, protective fury.

"Where is Dr. Aris now?" Arthur asked, his voice deady calm.

"We have units en route to his clinic," Miller said, standing up with him. "But men like Aris... they have money, lawyers, and a habit of disappearing when the walls close in."

"He's not disappearing," Arthur said, turning toward the door. "He hurt my boy. And I'm going to make sure he answers for it."
