Chapter 3 - The Letters That Came Back.

Emily had promised herself that the children would hear facts, not bitterness.

That promise became difficult the moment Noah asked why his grandfather had told their mother to stay away.

Thomas stepped toward him.

“Noah, it wasn't that simple.”

Noah moved closer to Emily instead.

Children understood distance long before adults understood consequences.

Emily crouched beside him.

“The adults made some bad choices before you were born.”

“Did Dad make them too?”

Daniel answered before Emily could.

“If I did, I need to know what they were.”

Patricia exhaled sharply.

“This is getting ridiculous.”

Lauren stood.

“No, Patricia.”

Every face turned toward her.

Lauren had spent three years believing Patricia was demanding because she cared deeply about Daniel's future.

Now she saw something else in the older woman's posture.

Control.

“You don't get to call this ridiculous when there are four children standing in the room.”

Patricia stared at her.

“I suggest you remember whose house you're in.”

Lauren gave a small, stunned smile.

“I was about to become part of this house.”

She glanced at the ring box in Daniel's hand.

“I think I deserve to know what kind of family I was joining.”

Daniel flinched.

Emily noticed but said nothing.

She had not come to destroy his relationship.

She had come because Grace had discovered an old photograph of Daniel in Emily's desk and asked the question Emily had dreaded for years.

Why doesn't our dad know us?

Emily had finally decided that silence was no longer kindness.

She took another envelope from the stack.

“This one came back when the children were six months old.”

She handed it to Daniel.

Inside was a photograph of four babies wearing tiny red hats.

Daniel unfolded the picture with shaking hands.

On the back Emily had written four names and four birth weights.

Sophie.

Grace.

Noah.

Eli.

Daniel stared at the photograph for so long that no one interrupted him.

“I missed this.”

Emily swallowed.

“Yes.”

“First words?”

“Yes.”

“First steps?”

“Yes.”

He looked up.

“Everything?”

Emily's voice softened despite herself.

“Everything so far.”

Daniel sat down.

The weight of that sentence bent him more than any accusation could.

Thomas walked toward a cabinet near the dining room.

He removed a slim leather folder.

Patricia immediately stepped in front of him.

“You promised me.”

“I promised because I believed you when you said Emily was trying to force Daniel back into the marriage.”

“And she was.”

“No,” Emily said.

Thomas looked at her.

“I know that now.”

He opened the folder.

Inside was a photocopy of the letter he had signed.

The original wording was cold and formal.

It stated that Emily Carter should stop all contact with the Mercer family and that any future communication would be treated as harassment.

Daniel read it twice.

Then he found something at the bottom.

A handwritten note in Patricia's script.

Send all future mail through Harlan.

Daniel knew that name.

Martin Harlan had been the Mercer family's attorney for twenty-five years.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Why was the family attorney involved?”

Patricia's eyes flicked toward Thomas.

Thomas closed the folder.

“That is the part I never understood.”

Emily slowly reached back into her handbag.

“I do.”

She placed a second document on the table.

It was a receipt from Harlan & Pike, dated eight years earlier.

The description contained only six words.

Private family matter - settlement consultation.

Daniel looked at Emily.

“Settlement?”

Emily met his eyes.

“Your mother offered me money to disappear.”
