Chapter 6 - The Drawer Behind the Lock.

By midnight, the Christmas dinner had become an investigation no one had planned.

The children were tired, so Emily prepared to take them home.

Daniel walked her to the entryway.

“Please don't disappear again.”

Emily stopped.

“I did not disappear.”

He nodded immediately.

“You're right.”

“I need to stop saying it like you caused this.”

That small correction mattered more to Emily than he knew.

She handed him a folded piece of paper.

It listed her phone number, the children's pediatrician, their school, and the name of the attorney who had advised her before coming.

Daniel looked at the last line.

Paternity testing appointment - December 27, 10:00 AM.

“You already arranged it.”

“Yes.”

“Because of my mother?”

“Because of everyone.”

Daniel nodded.

He did not argue.

Noah came to the doorway wearing his coat.

“Are you coming?”

Daniel looked at Emily before answering.

“To the test?”

Noah nodded.

“Yes.”

Daniel swallowed.

“I'll be there.”

After Emily left, Lauren drove home alone.

She told Daniel she needed space and that he needed the truth more than he needed comfort.

Thomas went upstairs.

Patricia remained in the dining room.

Daniel stayed across from her.

“You have one chance to tell me everything before I find it myself.”

Patricia looked exhausted but not remorseful.

“You think truth is simple because you haven't had to protect a family.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You protected an image.”

He walked into his father's study and opened the archive box again.

At two in the morning, Thomas returned in a robe.

“There may be more records in the old desk.”

Daniel looked toward the antique walnut desk against the wall.

“It has been locked for years.”

Thomas went to a bookshelf and removed a brass key hidden inside an old atlas.

Patricia appeared in the doorway.

“Thomas.”

He did not look at her.

“I'm done helping you hide from consequences.”

The key opened the center drawer.

Inside were tax files, property deeds, and a small locked metal case.

Daniel recognized the case.

His mother used to carry it between the house and office.

Thomas found a second key taped beneath the desk.

The case opened.

Inside were copies of checks, legal memos, and printed emails.

Daniel read the first email.

From: Patricia Mercer.

To: Martin Harlan.

Subject: Emily Carter.

Keep all communication away from Daniel until the partnership closes.

The second email was worse.

If she produces medical proof, tell her Daniel disputes paternity and will address it after the birth.

Daniel's hands went cold.

“I never disputed anything.”

Thomas sat heavily in a chair.

“I never saw these.”

Patricia remained in the doorway.

“You were willing to let her tell Emily that I denied my own children before they were born?”

Patricia finally showed emotion.

“I was going to tell you later.”

“When?”

“When your career was stable.”

“They are eight.”

Patricia looked away.

Daniel reached deeper into the case.

At the bottom was a small digital voice recorder.

Thomas frowned.

“That was Martin's.”

Daniel pressed the power button.

The battery indicator flashed once.

There were twelve saved files.

The oldest was dated eight years earlier.

Daniel selected it.

Static filled the study.

Then Emily's younger voice came through the tiny speaker.

“I am not asking for money.”

A man's voice answered.

“Mrs. Carter, Mrs. Mercer believes continued contact is not in anyone's interest.”

Emily replied immediately.

“Then tell Mrs. Mercer I am not contacting her.”

A pause followed.

“I am trying to contact the father of my children.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

Then a third voice entered the room.

Patricia's voice.

“Turn that off, Martin.”

The file ended.

Daniel looked up at his mother.

“You were there.”

Patricia said nothing.

Thomas reached for the recorder.

But Daniel stopped him.

May you like

“There are eleven more files.”
