Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

.The dining room fell into a suffocating silence.
The crystal chandelier above seemed to flicker,
casting harsh shadows across the half-eaten feast.
Amelia Ross lay twisted on the black reflective floor, one hand pressed against the bruise spreading beneath her left eye.
Her beige slip dress had torn at the knee, and every breath sent a blade of pain through her ribs.
Above her, Margaret Vale held a silver-handled hammer as calmly as another woman might hold a serving spoon.
The burgundy velvet of Margaret's gown drank in the warm light and made her look almost regal.
Almost.
“Teach her some manners.”
Margaret extended the hammer toward her daughter.
Vanessa Vale stepped forward in a black dress, her blonde hair shining as she accepted it with a delighted little smile.
“One hit wasn't enough.”
Amelia tried to crawl backward, but her palm slid across the polished floor.
No one around the table moved.
The executives, cousins, and family friends who had laughed with her an hour earlier now stared into their wineglasses.
They had watched Margaret accuse Amelia of stealing from the Vale family trust.
They had watched Vanessa slap her.
They had watched Margaret strike the floor beside Amelia's head and let the hammer glance across her shoulder.
Now they watched Vanessa raise it.
Amelia's fingers closed around the green jade pendant resting against her chest.
It was the only thing she had owned before the orphanage gave her a name.
The carved stone caught the chandelier light, and the tiny spiral on its surface appeared to glow.
The dining room doors crashed open.
Lucas Vale rushed inside in a gray suit and blue tie, his face tight with anger from the frantic message Amelia had sent him.
He saw the hammer first.
Then he saw Amelia.
“Drop it, Vanessa.”
Vanessa's smile faltered, but she did not lower her arm.
Lucas crossed the room, knocked the hammer from her hand, and dropped to his knees beside Amelia.
“Can you breathe?”
Amelia nodded, though the movement made the room tilt.
Lucas reached toward her bruised cheek, then suddenly froze.
His gaze had fallen to her chest.
“Wait... where did you get that?”
His voice was no longer angry.
It was terrified.
Amelia followed his stare to the pendant.
“I've always had it.”
Lucas touched the carved spiral with a shaking finger.
The color drained from his face.
“What the hell are you doing?!” Vanessa yelled.
Lucas ignored her.
He turned the pendant over and found three tiny scratches forming the letter E.
His mother had carved those marks twenty-two years earlier while laughing beside a nursery window.
Lucas remembered because he had been the one holding the pin.
He looked from Amelia to Margaret.
For the first time that evening, the matriarch's stern expression cracked.
Lucas saw recognition in her eyes.
Then he saw fear.
“This belonged to my baby sister,” he whispered.
A chair scraped sharply behind him.
Margaret stepped back from the table.
“Your sister died in the fire.”
Lucas lifted Amelia carefully from the floor and placed himself between her and the two women.
“Then explain why Amelia is wearing the necklace we buried with an empty coffin.”
The chandelier went dark.
In the blackness, someone snatched the hammer from the floor.

And from somewhere beneath the dining room came the unmistakable sound of a woman screaming.
