Chapter 11 - The Woman Beneath the Table.

Lucas stamped out the burning trail with a velvet curtain while Amelia followed the sound beneath the dining room.
The knocks came again from under the section of floor where she had fallen hours earlier.
Vanessa seized the hammer from Margaret.
She drove its claw into the narrow seam between two black tiles.
The first tile lifted, revealing a steel ring.
Lucas pulled it, and part of the reflective floor rose on hidden hinges.
A staircase descended into darkness.
Margaret stopped fighting.
Daniel ran.
He disappeared through the trust vault carrying one ledger and Gideon's original will.
Margaret followed before the guards understood what had happened.
Amelia wanted to chase them, but another knock sounded below.
She descended with Lucas and Vanessa into a medical chamber colder than the clinic.
A woman lay strapped to a narrow bed beneath a faded blue blanket.
Silver threaded her dark hair, and an old burn scar crossed one side of her neck.
She wore a hospital band identifying her as Jane Gray.
Lucas dropped to his knees.
“Mom?”
The woman's eyes opened at the sound.
For several seconds, she seemed unable to focus.
Then she lifted one trembling hand toward his face.
“My brave boy.”
Lucas broke in a way Amelia had not yet seen.
He bent over the woman and sobbed against her shoulder.
Eleanor Vale had survived the nursery fire.
Daniel had kept her drugged in private clinics under false names because her living testimony could destroy him.
Gideon had found her at Grayhaven only days earlier.
Before he could move her to safety, Margaret transferred both patients to the manor and used Eleanor as leverage.
The scream during the blackout had been Eleanor waking while Ruth tried to release her.
Amelia stood at the foot of the bed, unable to step closer.
She had imagined her mother as dead, cruel, loving, faceless, and impossible.
She had never imagined her alive beneath the room where strangers debated Amelia's right to exist.
Eleanor turned toward her.
Her gaze found the crescent birthmark behind Amelia's ear.
“Little snail.”
Amelia's knees gave way.
She reached for Eleanor just as the manor shook with an explosion.
The trust vault erupted upstairs.
Emergency sprinklers flooded the dining room, sending black water down the steps.
Marcus and his guards carried Eleanor out through the clinic passage.
Amelia climbed back to the ballroom and found the vault gutted by fire.
Most records were protected inside sealed boxes, but the ledger and original will were gone.
Lucas discovered a service door behind the portrait standing open to the garden.
Tire tracks cut through the wet lawn.
Margaret and Daniel had escaped.
Ruth called from the farmhouse on the investigator's satellite phone.
Her voice shook.
Harlan had arrived with six armed men.
They had taken Gideon.
The doctor was wounded but alive.
On the farmhouse table, Harlan left a phone playing a recorded message.
Daniel demanded the jade pendant, the memory card, and Eleanor before sunrise.
If they refused, Gideon would die on a live broadcast staged to implicate Lucas.
The meeting place was the Vale family's abandoned jade-processing mill.
Eleanor heard the message from her stretcher.
She tightened her hand around Amelia's.
“That is where Daniel took me after the fire.”
Her eyes filled with an old, unfinished terror.

“And it is where Margaret buried the nurse who helped me escape.”
