Chapter 3: The Hidden Enemy

Back at the house, the truth waited quietly in the shadows.

Security footage.

Mark had almost forgotten about the cameras installed in the kitchen.

With trembling hands, he pulled up the recording from earlier that morning.

There it was.

Emily had been in the kitchen—preparing breakfast, completely normal. She poured juice into a glass. No blue mug. No powder.

Then, minutes later…

Another figure entered.

Mark leaned closer to the screen.

It was Daniel.

His younger brother.

Daniel glanced around cautiously before pulling something from his pocket. He poured a clear liquid into the blue mug already sitting on the counter.

Mark’s blood ran cold.

“Why…?”

The answer came quicker than expected.

When confronted, Daniel broke down.

“I didn’t mean to hurt Liam!” he shouted. “I just wanted to scare Emily—to make you doubt her! You were going to cut me off, Mark! I needed you on my side!”

Mark stared at him in disbelief.

“You used my son?”

Silence.

The police took Daniel away that night.

Days later, the house felt different.

Quieter. Lighter.

Liam was back home, recovering, his laughter slowly returning.

Emily stood in the kitchen again—but this time, Mark stood beside her.

“I’m sorry,” he said softly. “I should’ve trusted you.”

Tears filled her eyes. “We almost lost everything.”

“But we didn’t,” Mark replied, taking her hand.

Across the room, Liam looked up at them and smiled.

And for the first time since that terrifying day, the house no longer felt like a crime scene.

It felt like home again.
