CHAPTER 3: WHAT REMAINS

The guests slowly dispersed, murmuring, shaken. The fairy tale had shattered—but something real remained in its place.

Ethan stood alone near the empty dance floor.

Or not quite alone.

“You saved me,” he said without turning.

Lila stood a few feet behind him, suddenly unsure of herself without the urgency of the moment.

“I just told the truth,” she replied.

He finally faced her.

“You risked everything. Why?”

She hesitated. Then, softer:

“Because I knew you before all of this.”

Ethan frowned. “What do you mean?”

A small smile. Sad, but warm.

“Three years ago. Coffee shop in Brooklyn. You were pitching your first startup to anyone who would listen. I was the girl working two jobs, pretending not to eavesdrop.”

Something flickered in his memory.

“You told me,” she continued, “that if you ever made it, you wouldn’t become one of them.”

Ethan let out a breath—half laugh, half disbelief.

“And you followed me all the way here?”

“I tried to reach you,” she said. “But people like Vanessa… they build walls.”

Silence settled again—but this time, it wasn’t heavy.

It was… open.

Ethan glanced at the empty ballroom, then back at her.

“Well,” he said, loosening his tie, “I guess the wedding’s canceled.”

Lila smirked. “Yeah. Hard to recover from attempted corporate betrayal.”

He laughed—really laughed this time.

“Stay,” he said after a moment. “Not as a waitress. Not as a warning.”

She raised an eyebrow. “Then as what?”

Ethan held her gaze.

“As someone honest. That’s rare enough.”

Lila considered him… then nodded.

“Okay,” she said. “But no more dramatic entrances.”

“No promises.”

Outside, the night carried on as if nothing had happened.

But inside that shattered ballroom, something far better than a perfect wedding had begun—

The truth.

May you like

And maybe, just maybe… something real.

THE END
