CHAPTER 1: THE DOOR THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The door slammed open so hard it echoed down the empty street.
A woman stepped out—tall, sharply dressed, her heels striking the pavement like judgment.
“Emily!” she snapped.
The girl in the camel coat stiffened immediately.
“I told you not to wander off!”
Her eyes dropped, but she didn’t let go of the girl she was holding.
“I’m sorry, Mom… she was hungry.”
The woman’s gaze shifted.
And what she saw made her expression harden.
Dirty clothes.
Barely-there shoes.
A child no one had claimed.
Her lips pressed into a thin line.
“Get up,” she said coldly—not to her daughter, but to the girl on the ground.
The hungry girl froze.
Fear replaced warmth in an instant.
“She’s coming home with us,” Emily said suddenly, her small voice shaking—but firm.
The woman let out a sharp laugh.
“Absolutely not.”
“She has nowhere to go!”
“That is not our problem.”
Emily’s hands clenched.
For a moment, she looked like a child again—small, powerless.
Then she did something unexpected.
She stepped in front of the girl.
“If we leave her,” Emily said, her voice breaking, “then who will help her?”
Silence.
Even the wind seemed to pause.
The woman stared at her daughter… really stared this time.
Not at her coat.
Not at her posture.
But at her heart.
And something shifted.
Just slightly.
“Get in the car,” she said finally.
Emily’s face fell—
May you like
Until the woman added quietly,
“Both of you.”
