CHAPTER 2: A PLACE THAT DIDN’T FEEL REAL

The house was bigger than anything the girl had ever seen.
Warm lights.
Soft carpets.
Food… everywhere.
She stood near the doorway, afraid to touch anything.
“What’s your name?” Emily asked gently.
“…Lily,” she whispered.
Emily smiled.
“I’m glad I found you.”
Lily didn’t know what to say to that.
No one had ever said they were glad she existed.
At dinner, Lily ate slowly at first.
Then faster.
Then like she was afraid it might disappear.
Emily’s mother watched in silence.
Every movement.
Every hesitation.
Every sign of a life lived without certainty.
Later that night, as Emily slept peacefully, Lily sat awake on the edge of the bed they shared.
“Are you going to send me away?” she asked softly into the dark.
A voice answered from the doorway.
“No.”
The woman stood there, arms folded—but her expression was different now.
Softer.
Conflicted.
“I used to think helping one person didn’t matter,” she said quietly.
“But my daughter…” she glanced at Emily, “…she seems to think it matters a lot.”
Lily lowered her eyes.
“It does,” she whispered.
The woman hesitated.
Then, slowly—
She stepped into the room.
“You can stay,” she said.
May you like
And for the first time in years—
Lily felt safe enough to fall asleep.
