Chapter 1: The Faces That Didn’t Lie

Ethan didn’t realize he had stopped walking until someone brushed past his shoulder and muttered an apology.

But he couldn’t move.

Because the boys—those two little boys—had just woken up.

One of them shifted first, rubbing his eyes with a small, sleepy fist. The other followed, lifting his head from Claire’s shoulder. Their movements were slow, innocent… unguarded.

And then they looked up.

Straight at him.

Ethan felt something inside his chest drop so suddenly it almost hurt.

It wasn’t just recognition.

It was something deeper. Instinctive.

The shape of their eyes.

The curve of their brows.

The quiet intensity in the way they looked at the world—like they were studying it instead of just seeing it.

Like he always had.

His breath caught.

No.

It couldn’t be.

But his body already knew what his mind was still trying to deny.

One of the boys—slightly taller—tilted his head.

“Mom?” he whispered softly, tugging at Claire’s sleeve.

Claire stirred, her eyes fluttering open slowly. For a brief second, she looked disoriented—like someone pulled out of a dream too quickly.

Then she saw him.

And everything changed.

Her face went pale.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

But afraid.

That was what hit him hardest.

Fear.

Not the kind reserved for strangers—but the kind born from history.

From something left unfinished.

“Ethan…” she breathed, barely audible.

The way she said his name—like it still belonged to him—made his chest tighten.

“You disappeared,” he said, his voice lower than he expected. Controlled. But not calm. “No explanation. No goodbye.”

Claire swallowed, her hand instinctively pulling both boys closer to her.

“They’re mine,” she said quickly.

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“I can see that.”

Her eyes flickered.

And for a split second—just a second—he saw it.

Guilt.

And something else.

Something that confirmed what he was beginning to understand.

“They’re yours too,” she whispered.

The airport noise faded into nothing.

Ethan didn’t hear the announcements.

Didn’t see the people.

Didn’t feel time moving forward.

Only those words.

Only the truth he had been denied for six years.

May you like

And suddenly…

Everything made sense.
