Chapter 2: The Truth His Mother Buried

They sat in a quiet corner of the terminal café.
The boys—Lucas and Liam—were eating pancakes like they hadn’t had a real meal in days. Carefully at first. Then faster once they realized no one was taking the plates away.
Ethan had ordered everything on the menu without asking.
Claire hadn’t touched her coffee.
Her hands trembled slightly as she held the cup.
“You should hate me,” she said finally.
Ethan leaned back in his chair, studying her.
“I’ve spent six years trying to understand why you left,” he replied. “So start talking.”
Claire nodded slowly.
“She found out,” she said.
He didn’t need to ask who.
“My pregnancy… your mother found out before I could tell you.” Claire’s voice was steady, but her eyes weren’t. “She said if I stayed, I would ruin your life. Your reputation. Your future.”
Ethan’s hands clenched on the table.
“She told me you didn’t want children. That you’d already agreed to marry someone else. That I was… a mistake you were too kind to admit.”
“That’s a lie,” Ethan said sharply.
“I know that now,” Claire whispered. “But back then… I had nothing. No family. No money. Just two babies on the way and a woman powerful enough to erase me.”
Ethan’s silence grew heavy.
“She paid me to leave,” Claire continued. “Made me sign papers. Said if I ever contacted you, she’d make sure I lost everything—including the boys.”
Ethan’s eyes darkened.
“And you believed her?”
“I had to,” she said. “Because I wasn’t afraid for me.”
She looked at the boys.
“I was afraid for them.”
The weight of that truth pressed into Ethan’s chest like something solid.
All those years.
All that silence.
Built on a lie.
Built on control.
Built on fear.
He exhaled slowly.
Then leaned forward.
“You should have told me,” he said quietly.
Claire met his eyes.
“I wanted to,” she admitted. “Every single day.”
Lucas suddenly looked up.
“Are you our dad?” he asked bluntly, syrup still on his chin.
Ethan froze.
For the first time in years…
He didn’t have an answer ready.
But something in him shifted.
Something undeniable.
He stood up, walked around the table… and knelt beside them.
May you like
“Yeah,” he said softly.
“I think I am.”
