Chapter 1: The Fallout

The silence after the call was deafening.

Mrs. Carter’s phone slipped from her trembling hand, clattering against the marble floor. Her perfectly composed image shattered along with it. For the first time in decades, she looked… small.

“Y-you wouldn’t dare…” she whispered, her voice no longer sharp, but hollow.

Daniel didn’t hesitate. His arm remained protectively around Emily, who was still on her knees, shaking. His eyes—once warm, once obedient—were now cold with clarity.

“I already did.”

The housemaid lowered her gaze, but not before a flicker of relief crossed her face.

Within minutes, notifications began flooding in. Accounts frozen. Access revoked. Board members alerted. The empire Mrs. Carter had wielded like a weapon was no longer hers.

“You chose this,” Daniel said quietly. “Every time you hurt her. Every time you thought I wouldn’t find out.”

Emily looked up at him, tears still streaming down her face. “Daniel… I didn’t want to cause this…”

He crouched beside her, gently lifting her chin. “You didn’t. She did.”

Behind them, Mrs. Carter let out a broken laugh that quickly turned into a sob.

“You’re throwing away your own mother… for her?”

Daniel’s jaw tightened. “No. I’m protecting my family.”

Those words landed like a final verdict.

And for the first time, Mrs. Carter realized—she had lost her son.
