Chapter 2: Picking Up the Pieces

The penthouse felt different now.
Quieter. Lighter. Safer.
Emily stood by the window days later, watching the city stretch endlessly before her. The bruises on her body were slowly fading, but the emotional scars lingered.
“You’re thinking too much again,” Daniel said softly as he approached from behind.
She gave a small smile. “I keep wondering… what if she comes back?”
“She won’t,” he replied firmly. “She has no power here anymore.”
And it was true. Mrs. Carter had been removed from the company board, her assets tied up in legal disputes. The woman who once controlled everything was now isolated—left to face the consequences of her own actions.
Still, Emily hesitated. “She’s still your mother.”
Daniel exhaled slowly. “And you’re my wife.”
That was the end of the argument.
He took her hands in his, more gently this time—as if afraid she might break. “I should’ve seen it sooner. I should’ve protected you.”
“You’re here now,” Emily whispered. “That’s what matters.”
In the doorway, the maid watched quietly, her eyes soft.
Later that evening, Daniel made another call—this time to arrange something unexpected.
Not revenge.
Closure.
