Chapter 1: The Name He Buried

The room had gone completely silent.

The man’s hand trembled as he held the photograph—a young woman smiling under sunlight, her hair caught mid-motion by the wind. Time had faded the edges, but not the memory.

“Where did you get this?” he asked, his voice breaking.

The little girl stood her ground despite the hundreds of eyes on her.
“My mom kept it,” she said softly. “She said… if anything ever happened, I should bring it to you.”

A murmur rippled through the crowd.

The man swallowed hard. “What’s your mother’s name?”

The girl hesitated—then answered.

“Lena.”

The name hit him like a shockwave.

He staggered back a step, his composure finally cracking in full view of everyone. Decades of control, power, and distance collapsed in an instant.

“Sir?” one of the guests whispered. “Do you know this child?”

He didn’t respond.

Instead, he slowly lowered himself to one knee—bringing himself face-to-face with her.

“How old are you?” he asked.

“Eight.”

His breath caught.

Eight years.

Eight years of absence. Of silence. Of a life he never knew existed.

“What’s your name?” he asked, barely above a whisper.

“Emma.”

He closed his eyes.

Because he already knew the answer before she said it.
