Chapter 2: The Truth They Couldn’t Hide

The gala was over.

Not officially—but emotionally, completely.

Guests lingered in uneasy clusters, whispering speculation as the powerful patriarch—Jonathan Hale—sat alone in a private lounge with the girl.

Emma.

Across from him, she held a small, worn bag tightly in her lap.

“Where is your mother now?” Jonathan asked carefully.

Emma looked down.
“She’s sick.”

A heavy silence followed.

“She didn’t want to come,” Emma added. “She said you had a different life now. That you wouldn’t want us.”

Jonathan’s jaw tightened.

“That’s not true,” he said firmly—but even as he spoke, guilt crept into every word.

Because years ago… he had chosen a different life.

Power. Reputation. A strategic marriage.

And he had left Lena behind without ever looking back.

Until now.

“Why send you alone?” he asked.

Emma reached into her bag and pulled out a folded letter.

“She said you’d understand after reading this.”

Jonathan took it slowly, unfolding the fragile paper.

Her handwriting.

Still the same.

"I never told you because I knew the world you chose had no place for us.
But Emma deserves to know where she comes from.
And you deserve the chance to decide who you want to be—before it’s too late."

His hands clenched the letter.

Too late.

The words echoed louder than anything else.

He stood abruptly.

“Where is she?” he demanded.

Emma flinched slightly—but answered.

“At a small clinic outside the city.”

Jonathan didn’t hesitate.

“Get the car ready,” he ordered his assistant.

Tonight wasn’t about appearances anymore.

It was about redemption.
